Serramazzoni – Waterfalls, Trails and History

Serramazzoni lies where the plain ends and the hilly landscape transitions into the mountains of Frignano. At 791 metres above sea level, you will experience a landscape that is particularly well explored via various trails and excursion destinations: on foot, on horseback or by mountain bike. The four-kilometre panoramic trail to Monfestino also combines physical activity with a cultural destination. The hamlet can be reached from the town centre via this trail. The Castello di Monfestino is located there; it is privately owned and can only be viewed from the outside. Plan your visit accordingly as an opportunity to see a historic building rather than as a tour of the interior. For families, this change between trail, landscape and viewing a castle from the outside can create a varied day itinerary.

Medieval Places and Historical Evidence

Pompeano is dominated by an old castle standing on a rock of volcanic origin from the former underwater area. The medieval village and its Rocca give the excursion a clear historical focus. The Rocca di Pompeano can be reached via a short ramp leading up from the village below to the rock. Those interested in churches and older architectural history can also include the Pieve di Rocca Santa Maria in their itinerary. It is dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta, has been documented since 971 and is considered one of the oldest and most impressive parish churches in the Modena Apennines.

Another historical landmark is the Torre della Bastiglia. It was part of a 13th-century fortification built for observation and to support the Castello di Monfestino. Together with Pompeano, Monfestino and the parish church, it creates an excursion programme in which different periods and architectural purposes can be recognised, without every visit having the same character.

Local Flavours and the Right Orientation

The cuisine of Serramazzoni is connected with an old farming tradition. A typical example is Calzagatti: the dish consists of polenta made from maize flour and beans and was created to compensate for the shortage of meat. Such regional dishes complement a holiday that is not made up solely of excursions, but also aims to get to know local ways of life.
