Polinago lies in the Frignano area in the Val Rossenna and offers views of Monte Cimone. The area combines natural landscapes with historic buildings, archaeological traces and a variety of opportunities for walks, trekking, cycling and horseback riding. If you are planning a trip where nature experiences and culture matter equally, you will find a range of options here for planning your days.

Natural Landscapes and Trails around Polinago

Polinago's landscape is varied and close to nature in every season. When planning your trip, you can therefore consider different ways of getting around: walks are just as suitable an option as trekking, cycling or horseback riding. The trail at Colle Ronco Vecchio offers a particularly special landscape experience. It partly follows a stream that forms numerous small waterfalls and cascades among the rocks along its course.

The sulphurous spring at Bagni di Brandola is also one of the area's notable natural features. It lies in the forest, just a few steps from Ca' Vecchia and Messer Polo, in surroundings with lush vegetation, trails and streams. The spring was already known in Etruscan and Roman times.

Ponte Ercole and the Historic Via Vandelli

From Brandola, a trail leads through the forest of the same name to the archaeological site of Ponte Ercole, also known as Ponte del Diavolo. Ponte Ercole is one of the Emilia-Romagna Geosites. The 33-metre-long monolith of Roman origin lies on the Lavacchiello stream. Part of the trail follows the historic route of the Via Vandelli, a transport route between Modena and Massa in Tuscany.

This excursion therefore brings together several historical layers: the forest trail from Brandola, an archaeological site, the Roman classification of the monolith and the route of a historic connection. For travellers who would like to combine nature and history along the way, this is a clear focus when selecting their daily destinations. Two different time estimates are also given for the Polinago panoramic route: trekking with a walking time of 4 hours and 20 minutes, and mountain biking with a riding time of 1 hour and 30 minutes. These details help you fit your preferred activity into your own daily itinerary.

Architectural History and Local Culture

One of the area's defining historic buildings is the Chiesa Parrocchiale dell'Assunta. It was built in 1073 under the patronage of Countess Matilda. The present architectural structure dates from 1510. The bell tower was built in 1891 on the remains of a medieval building. The sequence of these dates alone makes the building's history a subject in its own right for visitors interested in culture.

The Oratorio di Santa Croce stands on the banks of the Rossenna between Gombola and Talbignano. After being damaged by flooding of the Rossenna and the nearby Cervaro stream in 1842, it acquired its present octagonal form through reconstruction. An oratory dedicated to the Holy Cross has been documented at this location since 1006 and is associated with stories of extraordinary events.

The Mulino di Gombola also bears witness to the area's history. The mill dates from the 19th century and is the last mill in the area still in operation. Together with the churches, the oratory and Ponte Ercole, it forms a cultural programme that consists not only of individual sights, but also reveals different periods and functions.

Polinago as a Starting Point for Planning Your Trip

Two provincial roads cross the Polinago area and connect it with Sassuolo and Pavullo nel Frignano; the driving times are considered acceptable. When looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home, you can therefore first consider which combination you prefer: nature trails and landscapes, historic sites or a combination of both. The available activities range from walks to trekking, cycling and horseback riding, while local history adds its own distinctive highlights with the parish church, the Oratorio di Santa Croce, the mill and Ponte Ercole.

If you would like to supplement your trip planning with additional destination pages, you can also visit Zocca, San Cesario Sul Panaro, Querciagrossa, Ganaceto, San Donnino, Savignano Sul Panaro, Palagano and Casoni.
