History in Museums and at Historic Sites

The Museo Storico di Montese documents the history of the area from prehistoric times to the post-war period. Its sections include the Gothic Line and the Força Expedicionária Brasileira (FEB). A special link between several places of remembrance is provided by the Museo Diffuso della Linea Gotica. These include a museum in Montese focusing on the Brazilian FEB and a museum in Iola dedicated to the US 10th Mountain Division. The Oratorio di Riva, dedicated to Saints Fabiano and Sebastiano, is considered the oldest oratory in the area and is mentioned as early as 1212. The oratory dedicated to Saint Antonino Martire was built in the 12th century. Particularly noteworthy is the fresco cycle created by an unknown artist around 1450. The church of Montespecchio is first mentioned in a document dating from 1276.

The numerous trails in the Montese area can be explored on foot, by mountain bike, e-bike or on horseback. The predominantly wooded area is also rich in land used for growing fodder and conveys a landscape impression that clearly differs from a purely museum visit.

For a longer tour, there is a hiking trail of approximately 48 km. It runs from Casona di Marano via Montese to Monte Belvedere and can be travelled on foot, on horseback or by bicycle. Take this approximate distance into account when planning. Those travelling with different interests can separate shorter cultural stays from longer days of outdoor activity without losing sight of the historical themes.
