Lagosanto combines the history of land reclamation with a local history that stretches from a presumed pre-Roman past to local traditions. The municipality is a few kilometres from Comacchio and its Valli, but also has its own points of interest that turn the focus to the town itself: the parish church of Santa Maria della Neve, the historic Marozzo pumping station and the Antica Fiera d’Agosto. When choosing a holiday apartment, you can therefore consider Lagosanto both for its own history and for its proximity to the surrounding area.

A landscape transformed

Land reclamation and drainage profoundly changed the area and made Lagosanto an agricultural centre. The historic Marozzo pumping station is a tangible part of this development. It is located near Marozzo di Lagosanto, on an arm of the Po di Volano, and remained in operation until 1986. A new, modern pumping station was then built nearby. The older facility made it possible to drain Valle Gallare and the surrounding areas. This brings water management, agriculture and landscape history together in a local point of interest.

The Canale di Marozzo is also part of the area’s former transport and local history: until the 1970s, it ran through Lagosanto and was considered possibly the oldest transport route in the Basso Ferrarese. This timeline shows how the canal’s role changed over the course of history.

Local history and architecture

The origins of Lagosanto are unknown; they probably date back to pre-Roman times and are linked to nearby Spina. The town centre first developed as Lago and became Lagosanto around the year 1000, because the Benedictine monk S. Appiano lived and died there. The historical picture therefore spans a presumed early connection through to the medieval origins of the town’s name.

Another chapter in the town’s history is the parish church of Santa Maria della Neve. The decision to build the present-day church on the site of the earlier church was made in 1632; it was consecrated on 4 January 1644. The decision and consecration therefore took place on different dates. The present church building stands on a site that had already been used for religious purposes.

Festivals and archery

The Antica Fiera d’Agosto offers a glimpse into local festival traditions. The municipality listed the 2025 edition as the 451st. This gives the Fiera’s long history a concrete point of reference, without anticipating a date for future editions.

If you are interested in an active experience, you can try archery after contacting the Compagnia Arcieri Laghesi by telephone. The archery range is available to experienced visitors holidaying in the area; confirm availability directly with the Compagnia in advance. This will help you find out whether the club’s offering suits your level of experience and stay.

Considering Lagosanto as a base

The location provides a practical point of reference when choosing a holiday apartment: Lagosanto combines local attractions such as landscape history, the church and festival traditions with proximity to Comacchio and its Valli, just a few kilometres away. Consider whether you would prefer to focus on Lagosanto’s own history and the development of its landscape, or whether proximity to Comacchio and the Valli is more important to your choice of location. This comparison brings together local points of interest and a clear regional connection, helping you assess Lagosanto as a destination based on your own interests.
