Goro combines the landscape of the Po Delta with lighthouses, wetlands, boat trips and a fishing tradition that remains visible to this day. Families travelling here can combine different types of experiences: nature observation, brief cultural discoveries, cycling tours and excursions on the water. When choosing a holiday apartment in Goro, it is therefore worth deciding first on the pace of travel you are looking for.

Lighthouses at the mouth of the Po

One particularly notable destination is the Faro di Goro. The lighthouse was built in 1950 at the mouth of the Po di Goro on a sandspit known as Scanno or Scannone. Its cylindrical base is approximately 22 metres high, and the lantern still has a range of 10 miles. The Faro di Goro can be reached by boat or via a nature trail that begins at Porto di Gorino. Simply choosing between the water route and the nature trail gives the excursion a different character.

The Lanterna Vecchia is also part of the history of local navigation. It was built in 1864 near the coast as Goro’s first lighthouse. During the two-hour boat excursion “Birdwatching al vecchio faro” from Gorino, you pass the Lanterna Vecchia and then continue to the lighthouse. Important for planning: Access to the Lanterna Vecchia nature observation area is at the owner’s discretion. A boat trip can therefore be an independent way to get to know the landscape and the lighthouse.

Wetlands and birdwatching

The Sacca di Goro is located in the Po Delta Regional Park. Its area includes a Ramsar wetland and a Special Area of Conservation within the Natura 2000 network. Near Goro, the floodplain broadens into the Valle Dindona marshland. It is home to a heron colony with night herons, little egrets, squacco herons and cattle egrets. Families who enjoy observing animals can create an excursion programme in which not every stop follows the same pattern.

A specific route for nature enthusiasts is “Birdwatching a Volano - Mesola - Goro”. The approximately 25-kilometre route along the Po di Goro continues past the Sacca di Goro to the Lanterna Vecchia. The Scannone di Goro, also called Isola dell’Amore, is a landform that formed only recently as the Po Delta advanced, and it serves as a refuge for numerous birds. Those who prefer to explore the landscape on two wheels can also follow the lagoon embankment along a six-kilometre route.

Boat trips, fish market and local culture

The final section of the Destra Po cycle route runs near Goro to the port of Gorino and can be continued from there to the Faro. Numerous boat trips also depart from the ports of Goro and nearby Gorino, heading into the Po’s natural delta landscape and downstream as far as the sea. Along the way, the boats pass islands, sandbanks and reed beds. Depending on your interests, you can plan your trip around a cycling tour, a nature route or a boat trip.

Goro also reveals itself through its fishing culture. The catch is auctioned at the fish market every day. The Sacca di Goro is known for the production of molluscs, especially clams. The Sagra della Vongola celebrates Goro’s most important product as well as the town’s culinary traditions. The Teatro R. Ricci, known as the Teatrìn, offers a cultural contrast: the historic building is recognised as one of the historic theatres of Emilia-Romagna.

Ideas for discovering the area together

The Goro Center offers educational programmes for schools, children and young people that combine learning, creativity and discovering the surrounding area. Interactive, hands-on and creative workshops on the environment, culture and biodiversity are available for all age groups. This complements excursions into the wetlands and delta with an opportunity to explore nature and regional topics in a practical way.

If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Goro, you can base your decision on the experiences you have planned: the town is suitable for a trip involving lighthouses and boats, a nature-focused tour through wetlands, or a combination of cycling, the fish market and local culture.
