Argenta between wetlands, cycle paths and culture
Accommodation in Argenta
Argenta can be discovered through two very different travel experiences: the landscape of the Oasi naturalistica di Val Campotto opens up paths through internationally significant wetlands, while museums, churches and historic buildings make the town’s history visible. When planning your trip, you can therefore switch between days in nature, cycling excursions and cultural discoveries.
Wetlands and paths through the landscape
The Oasi naturalistica di Val Campotto has been recognised as a wetland of international importance under the 1972 Ramsar Convention. It covers approximately 1,600 hectares between the centre of Argenta and the village of Campotto and can be reached from the Museo delle Valli. As the sixth station of the Parco del Delta del Po in Emilia-Romagna, it is one of the defining natural destinations in the surrounding area.
The landscape includes the Valle Santa, with its tall vegetation, extensive reed beds and carpets of water lilies, as well as the Cassa Campotto e Bassarone. There you will find freshwater valleys, canals for flood control and numerous paths that can be accessed independently or with a guide. Near the Vallesanta, an observation tower offers an elevated view over the valleys. Anyone who wants to explore nature not only by looking at it, but also on foot or by bicycle, can reach the Campotto oasis from Argenta via the Percorso Vallesanta. Part of the Campotto station of the Parco del Delta del Po can be used freely via these paths.
Cycling between Argenta and the neighbouring towns
For longer tours, the approximately 45 km-long Percorso ciclonaturalistico Primaro is a good option. It connects Traghetto with Anita and passes through Consandolo, Boccaleone, Argenta and San Biagio. The Sentiero Primaro Daniele Zagani follows the former course of the Po di Primaro as closely as possible and uses preserved original embankments. In some places it moves several kilometres away from the Reno River, while remaining connected to the local natural sites.
The Ciclovia AL.BA.CO. passes through Argenta as well as Alfonsine, Bagnacavallo, Conselice, Fusignano and Lugo. It runs along low-traffic roads and cycle paths and is marked with its own signage. The Ferrara–Argenta route is of medium length, presents no particular difficulties and is fully paved. This allows you to choose when planning your day between a longer nature tour, signposted connections and a paved route.
Museums, churches and historic details
The Museo Civico is housed in the 15th-century church of San Domenico and includes an art gallery and an archaeological section. On display are paintings, sculptures, stone works and archaeological finds from the area around the Pieve di San Giorgio as well as from excavations in the centre of Argenta.
The Pieve di San Giorgio dates back to AD 569 and was built at the behest of Archbishop Agnello. Its marble portal, created in 1122, was commissioned from Giovanni da Modigliana. Its imagery tells the story of the martyrdom of Saint George; reliefs also depict the twelve months. The Pieve is located in a public park with a children’s playground, picnic area, public fountain and toilets. Those travelling with children can therefore combine a visit to the church with a break in the park.
The Santuario della Madonna della Celletta was built in its present form in the early years of the 17th century, after an apparition of the Virgin Mary had led to a growing influx of worshippers. Another destination related to industrial history is the Saiarino pumping facility: the Liberty-style building, inaugurated in 1925 by King Vittorio Emanuele III, houses the Museo della Bonifica. The pump hall contains six cast-iron pumps and is regarded as a monument to industrial archaeology. Due to construction work, the Museo della Bonifica is temporarily closed.
