Pizzano combines a striking river landscape with geological features and a layered village history. Here, the Idice flows between steep sandstone walls that herald the start of the Contrafforte Pliocenico. There are also historic places and buildings that offer insights into different eras. This provides a clear mix of themes for planning a trip: nature and rock formations on the one hand, and traces of local history on the other.

Sandstone, River and Geological Features

The landscape along the Idice is defined by steep sandstone walls. One particularly striking geological feature is the Discordanza di Pizzano: this locally significant geosite displays an angular unconformity between Pliocene sandstones and marls. The technical term refers to the contact between rock layers with different orientations. This makes the geological history tangible not just through a name, but in a specific rock formation.

The Discordanza di Pizzano forms a golden-yellow rock face on the left slope of the Rio dei Cavalli. Together with the sandstone walls along the Idice, it gives the landscape its distinctive character. Anyone interested in nature and geological history will find several different geological features here: the river’s rock walls, the geosite on the Rio dei Cavalli and the Contrafforte Pliocenico, whose beginning is heralded by the walls at Pizzano.

The time period of its formation is also noteworthy: the geological formation of Pizzano-Cà di Bazzone is thought to date back around five million years. This refers to its geological formation, not to the history of the village. When planning a trip, you can therefore distinguish between two time periods: the landscape’s long geological development and the much more recent recorded history of the village.

Village History and Historic Sites

The village of Pizzano is first mentioned in 1106. Another historical connection is Tommaso, who was known as a physician and astrologer and was the father of Cristina da Pizzano. Pizzano is considered Tommaso’s birthplace. Cristina grew up at the French court of Charles V and became the most important French-language writer of the 14th and 15th centuries. This connection also makes Pizzano interesting to travellers curious about the far-reaching life stories behind a place name.

Among the historic buildings is the 16th-century tower of the Palazzino, which stands in Pizzano. Pizzano Vecchia, in turn, is characterised by two tower houses from the same period.

Another chapter of the story takes us to Malapasqua. The old village was the seat of a podestà administration and later became the site of a mighty fortress built by the city of Bologna. The sequence of administrative centre and fortress gives this place a different historical significance from the 16th-century towers. Those interested in history can explore different subjects here: administrative structures, the construction of a fortress and the architectural styles of later centuries.

One of the most important religious sites in Pizzano is the Church of Santa Maria del Suffragio. The parish church is located at Via Caduti Alpini 1 in Ca' di Bazzone, Monterenzio. If you plan to attend a service, please check the times in advance.
