Dozza combines impressive murals, fortress history and regional wine culture. The town is ideal for a trip that combines cultural discoveries with walks and wine experiences. Depending on your interests, you can choose your holiday apartment in Dozza as a base for days focused on art, history or the landscape.

Experience murals in the open air

The Muro Dipinto is an open-air gallery that emerged from a mural biennial that has existed since the 1960s. In Dozza’s historic centre, the gallery comprises hundreds of frescoes and reliefs created by more than 200 artists. The Muro Dipinto has no fixed opening hours and no admission fee. This makes it possible to include the murals in an individual tour of the town without having to tie the visit to a specific time slot.

The Biennale del Muro Dipinto takes place every two years in September. During the biennial, visitors can watch the works being created live and speak with the artists. Anyone visiting during one of these editions therefore experiences the murals not only as a finished gallery, but also as an artistic process. In addition, the Centro Documentazione del Muro Dipinto collects, catalogues, preserves and presents artistic and documentary material from the various editions of the Biennale del Muro Dipinto since 1960.

Rocca Sforzesca and Museo Rocca di Dozza

Another highlight is the Rocca Sforzesca. Caterina Sforza rebuilt it at the end of the 15th century on the earlier ruins of Bolognese fortresses dating from around 1250. The Museo Rocca di Dozza offers various forms of guided tours for families, schools, small groups and people with special needs. This allows you to plan your museum visit to suit your travel group and your desired itinerary for the day.

A digital twin model of Dozza’s historic centre and the Museo della Rocca is also available for preparation. This interactive online replica can be accessed from any device and supports planning a visit on site. You can use it to familiarise yourself with the cultural attractions in advance and then decide how much space the Rocca and the murals should have in your trip.

Wine Trail and Short Panoramic Route

The Sentiero del Vino begins at the Enoteca Regionale Emilia Romagna in Dozza’s Rocca Sforzesca. The trail is 6.5 kilometres long, runs partly along paved roads and partly along unpaved paths and farm tracks, and is marked with its own signage. Along the Sentiero del Vino, wineries offer tastings of regional wines and tours of the vineyards. When planning your day, therefore, take the different trail surfaces into account and choose between walking, wine tasting and visiting vineyards as your priorities.

For a shorter route, the Passeggiata degli Artisti is a good option. The panoramic walking route is 250 metres long and has a rural atmosphere. It invites you to view the surrounding landscape through the eyes of important artists. It thus complements the large-scale murals with a view of the landscape and is suitable as a short activity in its own right between other visits.

The right accommodation for planning your trip

When looking for a holiday apartment in Dozza, it is worth deciding on your preferred travel rhythm first. If you mainly want to discover the frescoes, the biennial and the Rocca, culture will be the focus. For a more active day, you can plan the Sentiero del Vino and the wineries’ offerings. The Passeggiata degli Artisti also provides a short route with a scenic character. This allows you to choose your accommodation based on the experiences you want to define your trip, without committing yourself to just one type of sightseeing.

To compare other destinations, you can also view Monte San Pietro, Castiglione Dei Pepoli, Budrio, Monterenzio, San Vincenzo, Mordano, Pianoro and San Martino in Pedriolo.
