Brento: Monte Adone, Hiking Trails and Local History
Accommodation in Brento
Between Monte Adone and Historic Trails
Brento lies at the foot of Monte Adone and combines a striking rocky landscape with traces of a complex history. Those wishing to plan a trip featuring hikes, nature observation and cultural discoveries will find a variety of starting points here. At 655 m, Monte Adone is the highest rock massif in the Contrafforte Pliocenico nature reserve. At the same time, Brento is one of the places along the Via degli Dei, a long-distance hiking trail connecting Bologna and Florence.
When choosing a holiday apartment in Brento, it can therefore be decisive which experiences you want to place at the centre of your trip. The trails around Monte Adone appeal to travellers who want to spend their days actively. The area's history and the remains scattered throughout the landscape add a further cultural dimension to the trip. This allows plans to be tailored to different interests within a travel group, without every day having to follow the same pattern.
Hiking Trails with Different Characteristics
The Anello di Monte Adone loop trail leads from Brento to Monte Adone at an elevation of 654 m. Two ascent routes lead from Brento to Monte Adone. They allow you to complete a loop starting and ending in Brento; one route is steeper, while the other is gentler. These clearly different trail profiles help with planning your day: you can choose the route according to which ascent best suits the activity you have in mind.
The Via degli Dei also makes Brento interesting for long-distance hikers. In addition, stage 5 of the Linea Gotica runs from Brento at an elevation of 478 m to Poggiolo at 421 m. The trails and elevation figures mentioned here provide concrete guidance when putting together your excursions. Another distinctive landscape feature is the Grotta delle Fate at the foot of the rock face of Monte Adone in the Setta Valley. The narrow rock cleft is 50 m long; fallen boulders interrupt its course.
Rocks, Shelters and Local History
Between Brento and Monte Adone, there are rock strata as well as shelters that German soldiers dug into the rock during the Second World War. Those interested equally in landscape and history can incorporate these different traces into their trip planning. The area's historical roots reach further back: the settlement of Brento is of Roman origin and probably even older.
The landscape and the past also come together in the area around Monte Castellazzo. Its panoramic plateau was home to a Byzantine fort in the 6th century. At the foot of the mountain in the direction of Savena, the few remains of the ancient church of Sant'Ansano, which was bombed in 1944, lie in the forest. These are independent historical points of interest that extend the stay beyond the trails themselves.
Brento's more recent history can be seen in the town's new church. It was built in 1959 by Padre Olinto Marella together with the nearby Casa del Pellegrino. The town, which was partially destroyed during the Second World War, was rebuilt in the post-war period. Casa del Pellegrino was established on land donated by benefactors for a community of young people; the property had been entrusted to Don Olinto Marella.
Brento as a Starting Point for Planning Your Trip
Accommodation in Brento is particularly well suited to your plans if you want to combine hiking trails, rock formations and historic sites. When searching for a holiday apartment, consider which activities you want to combine during your stay: the loop trail to Monte Adone, sections of the Via degli Dei, the landscape in the Contrafforte Pliocenico or the historical sites around Brento. For travel groups with different preferences, it may be useful to alternate active days on the trails with quieter explorations of the town.
