Grottola is the municipal seat of Marzano Appio. The municipality brings together distinctive volcanic landscapes and architectural and artistic heritage from different periods: from Castello di Terracorpo, with its Renaissance character, to 15th-century frescoes in the Cappella di Santa Maria del Carmine. A described hike to the Santuario della Madonna dei Lattani also starts in Grottola.

Volcanic landscapes and views

Marzano Appio lies on the northeastern slope of the Roccamonfina volcano and is surrounded by dense chestnut forests. The municipality extends partly along a hilltop ridge and partly across the summit of a small rise. This setting gives the area a distinctive landscape, while the chestnut forests help shape its regional character.

Lago delle Corree offers a different side of the volcanic landscape. It is of volcanic origin and is one of the crater lakes that collect water after volcanic activity has ceased. Its characteristic conical shape and the granite rocks among which it is nestled define the landscape. The lake lies alongside the Casilina road. Here, geological origins meet a striking form that contrasts with the forested slopes.

Terracorpo also offers a distinctive landscape: from the higher part of the village, the view stretches as far as Vesuvius. Those interested in the surrounding area can take in a variety of features—the forested volcanic slope, the crater lake and the expansive views.

Architecture, frescoes and traditions

Castello di Terracorpo stands in the municipality of Marzano Appio. Its rectangular ground plan gives the complex a clear form; in its present appearance, the castle has the character of a Renaissance palace. The Chiesa dell’Annunziata complements this architectural picture with a rose window on its façade. Its history has also been shaped by the effects of war: after suffering severe war damage, the church was rebuilt and reopened for worship in 1956.

In Località Valle Cupa, the Cappella di Santa Maria del Carmine offers another point of interest: 15th-century frescoes, including a Madonna and Child. The image is described as having a pronounced Umbrian cultural influence. The contrast between the castle’s clear form, the rose window on the church façade and the artwork in the chapel brings the different forms of local architectural and artistic history to life.
