Pontelandolfo: History, Crafts and Nature
Accommodation in Pontelandolfo
Pontelandolfo combines distinctive buildings, places of remembrance and a hilly landscape rich in forests. The medieval tower, churches with different histories, folklore and historic craft traditions each give the town its own character. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can plan around your preferred travel focus: architecture and history, the annual folklore festival or nature all offer different starting points.
Building History and Places of Remembrance
All that remains of the medieval castle is the Torre Medievale. It is more than 20 metres high, measures 14 metres in diameter at its base and has walls more than 4.5 metres thick at the foundation. These measurements give a tangible sense of the proportions of the surviving tower.
The Chiesa del S.S. Salvatore was built in the Romanesque style before 1500. The earthquake of 1688 completely destroyed it; ten years later, it was rebuilt in the Baroque style. The Chiesa di San Rocco, in turn, was dedicated to Saint Roch of Montpellier in 1609. After it was damaged in the 1688 earthquake, it was rebuilt and restored in 1785. Inside, it preserves 18th-century frescoes and a wooden statue of Saint Roch.
The Tempio dell’Annunziata Antica was built around 1400 at one of Pontelandolfo’s former entrance gates. The town is also associated with a painful chapter in history: the burned bodies of the victims of 14 August 1861 were first buried here. The Monumento Vittime dell’eccidio del 1861 was erected in 2011 and created by the sculptor Mario Ferrante.
The Monumento alle vittime di Bridgeport commemorates another tragedy, in which 28 workers lost their lives, including eight emigrants from Pontelandolfo in the United States. These memorial sites point to different stories connected with the town and its people.
Crafts and Folklore
The Fontana Battistero stands in the centre of the main square. Around 1800, stonemasons from Pontelandolfo built it using local stone. The town also had a diverse tradition of historic crafts, including textile work, embroidery, and work with iron, wood and stone. The traditional woollen cloth known as “panno di lana” is also associated with Pontelandolfo.
The folkloric group “Ri Ualanegli Gruppo Folk” from Pontelandolfo was founded in 1928. The Pontelandolfolk Festival is an established international folklore festival, held annually as part of the Settimana Eco-Folkloristica. For travel planning, this offers two distinct connections to folklore: the group’s long-standing history and a recurring festival event.
Wooded Landscape and Trails
Olive groves and forests are part of Pontelandolfo’s natural landscape. The town lies between the mountains of Monte Calvello and Sauco, which separate the Tammaro Valley from the Lenta Valley. Paths wind through the mixed forests of the hilly landscape, where ash trees, maples and chestnuts grow.
The forest areas offer opportunities to observe wildlife and birds. Species found there include hares, foxes, martens, magpies, cuckoos, owls, eagle owls and blackbirds. The Alente also adds its own natural feature: the river is a tributary of the Calore and is known for the presence of the spectacled salamander.
The Water Experience focuses on springs and fountains in the municipal area west of Monte Calvello. Another way to experience the town is along the route of Ruzzola del Formaggio, a traditional game: it runs from the fountain in Piazza Roma to the area beside the Chiesa di San Rocco, then follows a designated route back through the centre.
When choosing a holiday apartment, you can start by deciding on the purpose of your trip: should the focus be on building history and memorial sites, the annual folklore festival, or forests, wildlife watching and springs? If you want the festival to be part of your trip, check the event dates for your travel period.
