Discover Buonalbergo: Roman roads, churches and traditions
Accommodation in Buonalbergo
Buonalbergo reveals itself through several layers of history: Roman roads and structures stand alongside church art, a ducal palace and local festival traditions. The Via Traiana can be found here in the form of a bridge, a milestone and part of a stage description; churches and local events add further cultural highlights. If you are travelling with children, these contrasts can provide topics for conversation – from the layout of a church interior to the purpose of a historic stopping point.
Ancient roads and historic traces
The Ponte delle Chianche is a Roman bridge on the Via Traiana in the municipality of Buonalbergo, in the province of Benevento. It lies on the valley floor, which is crossed by the Torrente Santo Spirito, a tributary of the River Miscano. A milestone from the Via Traiana is on display in the courtyard of Palazzo Spinelli, a 17th-century ducal palace. It was found in the Buonalbergo area and brought to the courtyard in 1954. The two objects show the road in different ways: once as a bridge in the valley, and once through a single artefact.
The stage description of the Via Francigena del Sud also provides its own point of reference: Buonalbergo is the end of stage 15 and the start of stage 16. Stage 15, from Benevento to Buonalbergo, follows the Via Traiana towards Brindisi. The sequence of stages thus places the town on a route, while the bridge and milestone illustrate tangible traces of the ancient road.
The Taverna di Monte Chiodo was a fortified stopping point on the Tratturo Regio Pescasseroli–Candela. It served for paying tolls, resting and taking refreshments. Significant remains of ancient buildings and underground cavities have been recorded on Monte Chiodo, a hill north of Buonalbergo. The latter may be parts of an aqueduct. The Rocca di Montegiove stood on the summit, incorporated into the walls of the settlement there.
Churches, art and more recent cultural history
The Santuario SS. Madonna della Macchia houses a 12th-century Byzantine wooden statue of the Virgin Mary with the Christ Child. The Santuario has a single nave and an adjoining hermitage. The Chiesa Madre San Nicola di Bari has a different layout: its central nave is flanked by two side aisles. The three naves refer to the central space and the two side areas, making the difference between the two types of church clear.
The ViATor Via Appia Traiana – Officina per la Ricerca museum opened on 27 July 2025 in the ancient Palazzo Angelini in Buonalbergo.
The Fontana del Lombardo is located between the historic centre of Buonalbergo and the Torrente Santo Spirito. This setting brings the town centre and the stream together in one view, while the archaeological traces and churches highlight other aspects of a stay.
Local traditions and travel planning
The Sagra de lo Ciammarruchiello takes place on 14 August and is celebrated in Piazza Garibaldi. The Sagra has been recognised by the Italian Senate as a “Sagra di Qualità” since 2018 and has been organised for more than 50 years. Another recurring occasion is the programme of events at the Oasi San Pio Monument: spiritual, social and community events take place there every year during the first week of July. The entrance to the Oasi San Pio is accessible; if this is important for your plans, briefly confirm the current conditions before your visit.
The events offer two different points of reference in the year: the programme at the Oasi San Pio Monument in early July and the Sagra in Piazza Garibaldi on 14 August. If an event date is shaping your trip, check the dates in advance.
