Villamaina combines thermal bathing with outdoor art, sacred history and archaeological traces. This offers different ways to plan your trip: spending time in nature, discovering works of art and architectural history, or exploring collections and local traditions. Families can also choose among these themes according to their interests.

Thermal Baths, a Chestnut Grove and Walking Trails

The Terme di San Teodoro in Villamaina offer treatments using the natural water and mud deposits found locally. Treatments include a Turkish bath (hammam); check in advance whether this treatment is currently available. From the Antiche Terme di San Teodoro, you can take a short nature walk to Contrada Felitto, home to a centuries-old chestnut grove. The dense forests around Villamaina also offer good opportunities for hiking.

Sculpture Art and Outdoor Spaces

The Contrada Antica sculpture park showcases remarkable works by Vincenzo Caputo and Alessandro Battaglino among forests, rocks and paths. The park is suitable for excursions and picnics, combining nature with sculpture art. Those interested in public art can also see Giovanni Lepore’s sculpture “Nuovo millennio” in Piazza Risorgimento.

Giovanni Gussone Municipal Park offers a different focus: its facilities include a field for soccer or basketball, a bocce court, tree-lined paths and a small open-air amphitheater. Alongside viewing sculptures, visitors can choose to exercise, stroll along the park paths or spend time at the amphitheater.

Churches, Collections and Roman Traces

The Chiesa Madre was built as the private chapel of the Caracciolo family’s ducal palace. Inside the church is the finely carved local-stone cenotaph of Duke Annibale Caracciolo, dating from 1539. It also houses a 16th-century triptych from the Sabatini school. These three works give the church a special connection to the history of the Caracciolo family and to the art of their respective periods.

The objects on display at the Museo Paolino Macchia span the period from the 5th century BC to the 3rd century AD. The visitor route includes tactile paths and LOGES guidance systems to help people with visual impairments find their way. Another archaeological collection is the Raccolta Museale Comune di Villamaina, with 933 finds.

The Fonte di Formulano also points to the Roman past: remains of ancient Roman buildings with mosaic floors, discovered in the 19th century, are preserved there. Church art, museum objects and archaeological traces offer different ways to explore Villamaina’s history, from a single cenotaph to finds spanning a long period.

Festivals and Local Traditions

San Paolino di Nola is Villamaina’s patron saint and was celebrated together with Sant’Antonio in 2024. That year, the Festa di San Paolino di Nola included a procession through the town with statues of the saints and a band.

Another tradition associated with Villamaina is San Giovanni e Paolo: on the last Saturday in May, a pilgrimage leads to the Church of Saints Giovanni and Paolo in the forest of Girifalco. The church is located in the territory of Torella dei Lombardi. This geographical detail is important when planning your trip, as the pilgrimage destination is not in Villamaina itself.

Villamaina as a Starting Point for Trip Planning

To get there, take the A16 Napoli–Bari and exit at Grottaminarda, then continue towards Gesualdo and on to Villamaina. Check the road route before setting out. When choosing a holiday apartment, you might first consider whether you are most interested in nature and hiking, outdoor art, or archaeological and sacred history. These different priorities can help you plan your accommodation and trip around your interests, without assuming that particular excursions or visiting conditions are available.
