Taurasi combines a strong wine tradition with a historic townscape and distinctive traces of the past. If you are planning a trip where regional specialties, culture and discovery come together, the town offers several different points of interest. A holiday apartment in Taurasi can be a suitable choice if you would like to get to know the character of the town and plan your days according to your own interests.

Experience Wine and Local Specialties

Wine is an important part of Taurasi’s identity. The “Percorso Sensoriale Tau” in the stables of the Castello Marchionale introduces visitors to the world of Taurasi DOCG, Fiano di Avellino DOCG and Greco di Tufo DOCG wines. This means that the focus is not only on a single wine, but also on gaining a broader insight into the regional wine culture. Taurasi DOCG is considered a wine with a great tradition and is made from a grape variety with very ancient origins.

The Fiera Enologica Taurasi is also part of the town’s annual calendar and takes place every year in August. Those who take this date into account when planning their trip can arrange their stay around a special wine event. The Ciliegia Maiatica points to another regional specialty: it is a typical product of the Agro Taurasino. For an independent trip with a holiday home or holiday apartment, these themes offer good opportunities to set your own priorities among wine, local history and regional products.

Historic Buildings and a Distinctive Town Center

The Castello Marchionale was probably built in the 7th century AD. Carlo Gesualdo was born in its Stanza del Principe in 1566. The castle complex therefore combines an early historical context with a specific figure from the town’s history. The castle also houses the “Percorso Sensoriale Tau”, bringing historical and wine-cultural themes together in one place.

The medieval town center of Taurasi is surrounded by a city wall. Its herringbone-style urban layout, with regular side streets, branches off from a main axis running from east to west. This structure also makes the town center interesting for visitors who want to explore not only individual buildings but also the town’s organically developed form.

Sacred sights include the Chiesa Collegiata di San Marciano Vescovo. It has a single-nave interior with a frescoed vault and six marble altars. These are complemented by a Baroque high altar from 1747 by an unknown artist, a wooden organ from 1726 and a wooden statue of San Marciano Vescovo by Giacomo Colombo from 1708. Palazzo Marchionale also contains a barrel-vaulted chapel with Baroque stucco decoration and a polychrome marble altar.

Landscape and Archaeological Traces

The Località Caselle is considered a Late Antique or early medieval settlement dating from the 5th to the 8th century AD and represents the earliest archaeological traces of Taurasi. In the Località San Martino there is a high-lying plain with abundant water and fertile soil; its location is interpreted as evidence of a small agricultural settlement. The Calore River passes through Taurasi. A bridge between Taurasi and Torre le Nocelle was probably built in the Late Middle Ages, between the 12th and 15th centuries. When the water level is low, the remains of its stone piers are visible.

If you would like to combine different interests during your trip, you can assign different priorities to wine, architectural history, the town’s layout and regional products. This allows you to choose your accommodation based on the desired mix of cultural discoveries and culinary themes, without limiting your stay to a single experience.

If you would also like to compare other destinations: Trevico, Capriglia Irpina, Teora, Castelvetere Sul Calore, Bisaccia, Caposele, San Michele di Serino and Torre Le Nocelle.
