Pietrastornina: Rocky Cliff, Forest and Ceramics
Accommodation in Pietrastornina
Pietrastornina combines impressive high-altitude landscapes with a settlement history dating back to the Middle Ages. The municipality lies within the PARCO REGIONALE DEL PARTENIO; at the same time, its rocky cliff, town gate, palazzi, churches and ceramics tell of different chapters in the town’s history. If you are looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home for your trip, you can therefore choose Pietrastornina according to both its landscape and its cultural attractions.
Forests, Heights and a Wide Horizon
About 50 percent of the municipal area is covered by forests. Below 1,000 metres, chestnut coppice forests and mixed coppice forests predominate; above this altitude, there are beech forests. This arrangement makes the landscape particularly vivid: Pietrastornina offers not just forest, but different types of forest at different elevations.
The TORRENTE S. MARTINO runs through the centre of Pietrastornina. From the heights above the town, a 360-degree horizon opens up. The mountain road leads up to 1,170 metres to the locality of Acqua delle Vene and also to the locality of Toppa Riviezzo at 1,470 metres. Those who want to include landscapes and high-altitude destinations in their travel planning will find specific reference points here for choosing their own excursions and day-trip destinations.
Rock Fortress and Medieval Town Centre
The original settlement centre of Pietrastornina gradually developed between the 10th and 11th centuries at the foot of the fortified rocky cliff. Castello di Pietrastornina was built on the large rock needle above the medieval settlement. The castle is first mentioned in a deed of donation issued by the Lombard prince Arechi II in November 774. For travellers interested in culture, this is a particular attraction: the town can be explored through its distinctive topography as well as through its long history.
The historic appearance of the town also includes the Porta Urbana di Via Castello. It dates from the period when the medieval town centre was established, generally dated from the 12th to the 15th century. Its barrel vault originally covered a 12-metre-long section of road. It was later extended by a further 2 metres on the southern side; the Porta measures 2.30 metres across. Such dimensions also make the structure interesting for families who enjoy discovering historic details together rather than merely collecting dates.
Palazzo, Churches and Places of Remembrance
The Palazzo Baronale – Palazzo Campobasso was probably built in the first decade of the 17th century at the request of Ugone Pagano. His predecessor Cesare Pagano, the first Baron of Pietrastornina, had acquired the property from the Verginian monks in 1587; Ugone Pagano inherited the fief from his father in 1600. Above the entrance portal, the coat of arms bears the engraved date 1614.
The religious buildings also span several centuries. The first church foundation of the Chiesa della Madonna del Carmelo, between the farmsteads of Jardino and Mavilia, is dated to 20 February 1742. The new Chiesa della Madonna del Carmelo was built behind the site of the original chapel between 1856 and 1860. The Chiesa dei Sacri Cuori di Gesù e Maria was founded in 1919, is located in the Furmo district and is designated as a rectory of the parish of Maria Santissima Annunziata di Pietrastornina. The building has a regular rectangular floor plan, a single-nave interior and a pitched roof covered with tiles.
The history of the Chiesa della SS. Annunziata di Pietrastornina also includes a clearly dated interruption: it was closed in 1979 for restoration and consolidation work and reopened for worship in 1992. At the Il Monumento ai Caduti nella Grande Guerra, two bronze statues depicting victory and a soldier stand at the top of the stele.
Ceramics and Local Festival Traditions
With Donato Massa, Pietrastornina has a ceramic history associated with a specific name. The ceramist was born in Pietrastornina in 1677, the son of Biagio Massa. The municipality’s virtual museum section provides a photographic catalogue, version 1.0, featuring works by artists who took part in various editions of the Concorso Nazionale di Ceramica “Donato Massa”. The catalogue can be downloaded and viewed on a computer.
Local festival culture also includes culinary events. The programme for the Festa di San Biagio in Pietrastornina included a gastronomic tasting organised by the association “La Vela” at 8:30 p.m. For Saturday, 27 June 2026, a new edition of the Sagra dei Culurgiones was planned in Ciardelli Inferiore, a district of Pietrastornina in the province of Avellino, in connection with the patronal celebrations for San Pietro Apostolo. The Sagra is considered an event that has existed for more than 20 years and connects Sardinia with Irpinia. In the weeks beforehand, more than 4,000 Culurgiones are prepared by hand in Ciardelli Inferiore, a district with approximately 50 inhabitants.
