Church art and architectural history in Ruffano

The Chiesa della Natività di Beata Maria Vergine was built between 1706 and 1712. Between 1765 and 1776, the painter Saverio Lillo, who was from Ruffano, decorated its walls with numerous large canvas paintings depicting biblical and hagiographic episodes. Art enthusiasts will therefore find a precise interplay of church interior, construction period and painting here.

The Chiesa dell'Immacolata was built around the middle of the 16th century and has a stone portal created in 1603, featuring carved Marian symbols. The Church of Madonna del Carmine was built in 1713 on the foundations of the former Church of San Marco and has a high altar made of Lecce stone dating from the same year, attributed to Carrone. The Chiesa dell'Annunziata was built in the 17th century on the foundations of a chapel of the Greek rite with the same name.

The historic buildings also tell of special connections. The Porticato dei Mercatanti received its name because its arcades enclosed the entrances to workshops, manufactories and shops. The Loggia Brancaccio, added in the 17th century, is an uncovered corridor with several rooms that directly connects the palace with Ruffano's Chiesa Matrice. The medieval Torre delle Moline stands at the end of a projecting section of building with eleven arcades and a balustrade, extending across the Piazzetta Ruffo to the tower.

The Chiesa di San Francesco da Paola was built in 1709, is currently privately owned and preserves inside a wooden statue of the saint from the 18th century as well as a majolica floor from the same period.

Natural landscape and underground history

The Bosco Occhiazzi covers approximately two hectares and is mainly characterized by Mediterranean maquis. From Manfio, on the Serra di Casarano ridge, the view stretches as far as the sea near Gallipoli and the marinas of Ugento. The restored rooms serve as the park's visitor centre and educational space.

The Cripta SS. Crocefisso, also known as the Cripta di Santa Costantina, is a natural underground space in the area between Casarano, Ruffano and Taurisano. In the 11th century, Byzantine communities transformed it into a Christian place of worship; the grotto contains Palaeolithic engravings. Access is via stairs and is difficult for people with reduced mobility.

Festivals, flavours and living traditions

The traditional Fiera di San Marco takes place in Ruffano on 25 April. At the San Marco festival, scapece is traditionally eaten: a dish of fish marinated in vinegar and breadcrumbs, with saffron giving it its characteristic yellowish colour. The dish was introduced by merchants from Gallipoli.

On the evening of 15 August, numerous people gather in Torrepaduli, a district of the municipality of Ruffano, for the San Rocco festival. There, spectators and dancers can take part in the “danza delle spade” and in the Salento pizzica. Pizzica-Scherma, also known as the “dance of the swords”, is a traditional form of dance in which only men imitate a fencing duel with finger movements, accompanied by the rhythm of musicians playing tambourines in a circle.
