Discover Novoli: Holiday Apartment, Fòcara and Cultural History
Novoli combines a distinctive fire festival with churches, libraries and unusual evidence of its local history. Anyone planning a holiday apartment in Novoli will find several cultural highlights to consider when planning their trip: the Fòcara in January, sacred art, historic collections of knowledge, rural working life and summer festivities.
Fòcara and Festival Traditions
The Fòcara of Novoli is made from hand-woven vine branches and is lit on the night of January 16–17. The fire is 25 metres high; volunteers and experienced farmers build it from around 100,000 bundles of reclaimed vine branches. The panino cu li turcinieddri is also associated with the festival as a culinary feature. Craftsmanship, agriculture and festival culture come together here in a motif of the town.
Churches and Sacred Art
The Chiesa dell’Immacolata is the oldest church in Novoli and was the town’s first parish church. It contains a fresco of the Madonna and Child from the first decades of the 14th century. The Chiesa di Sant’Antonio Abate was opened for public worship in 1662. At the Passionist monastery, the Chiesa Cuore Immacolato di Maria is designed in the Gothic style.
The Chiesa di San Salvatore, now the Chiesa di Sant’Oronzo, preserves a stone altar commissioned by Alessandro Mattei from Giuseppe Cino in 1704. The Teatro Comunale was inaugurated in April 1891 with the Compagnia Almirante. The Masseria della Corte, also known as the Masseria Baronale, contains a 16th-century oil mill carved into the rock, referred to as a Trappeto „alla calabrese“. The Palazzo Baronale housed the extensive library of Alessandro Mattei II; the philosopher and physician Girolamo Marciano from Leverano used it to complete his Descrizione di Terra d’Otranto.
Books, Grotta and Cultural Sites
The Biblioteca Minima has more than 36,000 books and pamphlets, including a 15th-century parchment, an incunabulum, six Cinquecentine and rare editions. The Grotta Lago is considered evidence of agricultural and pastoral life in Novoli. The Palazzo Baronale currently hosts cultural activities and has a virtual classroom as well as a visitor centre.
The operation and management of Novoli’s tourist information point and the Museo del Fuoco have been extended until December 31, 2026. Festivities are held in Novoli in honour of Maria Ss. del Pane; the summer patronal festival is scheduled for the third Sunday of July each year. Novoli railway station is well connected to Lecce and the rest of the province.
