Leverano between Old Town and Countryside

Leverano lies in the fertile plain of the Salento hinterland on the Ionian side. The historic centre is largely intact and uniformly preserved; small houses line its paved lanes. Those looking for a holiday apartment in Leverano can therefore choose between different focuses: historic townscapes, wine and olive oil, events or places of natural-science interest.

Historic Highlights in Leverano

One of the distinctive buildings is the Torre dell’Orologio on Piazza Roma. It dates from the first half of the 18th century. The Torre Federiciana also rises 28 metres high in the town centre.

The Church of Madonna della Consolazione in Leverano dates from the 17th century. According to tradition, its construction is attributed to the miraculous discovery of an image of the Virgin Mary. The Museo Multimediale della Cultura del Lavoro di Leverano is housed in reclaimed spaces of the former Tabacchificio Masseria Quartararo and presents audiovisual stories about traditional occupations and the modern world of work.

The Teatro Comunale is part of a multifunctional centre built on the remains of Leverano’s former covered market. Leverano’s tourist information point was established in July 2017 and is located in the historic centre at Piazza Roma 19.

Wine, Olive Oil and Events

During the tour at Conti Zecca, you will learn about the main stages of winemaking and ageing, local grape varieties and vineyard management. A tasting explains the history and essential characteristics of each wine. The Enoteca Conti Zecca is located at the winery in Leverano and offers an immersive experience featuring the winery’s most representative wines.

The events “Novello in festa”, “L’Oro della terra” and “Leverano in fiore” offer different opportunities for culture and enjoyment. During these events, the tourist information point hosts art installations and organises evening aperitifs with wine, tastings of local products, workshops and live concerts. Leverano in fiore is a two-day event dedicated to floral art, held in May in the historic centre of Leverano. “L’Oro della Terra – i giorni dell’olio e dell’olivo” is an event held in December to protect and promote olive oil and the olive tree as characteristic elements of the area. “Novello in festa” is organised during the first days of November by Pro Loco Leverano together with the municipal administration and local wineries.

Nature and Choosing Your Accommodation

For those interested in nature, Leverano offers two different points of interest. Vora delle Arche in Leverano is noteworthy for its natural-science importance for amphibian reproduction and the birdlife present there. Patula Cupa is now a city park whose remaining wetland is considered important from a natural-science perspective.

If you are looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home in Leverano, you can base your decision on your travel interests: culture in the historic buildings and museum, wine and olive oil through tours and events, and nature at Vora delle Arche and Patula Cupa. In this way, your choice of accommodation reflects your preferred holiday focus without presupposing a particular travel style.
