Holiday Apartment in Felline: Culture and Local History
The Frantoio Ipogeo di Felline has been restored, and the area above it has been upgraded as a new public meeting space. Here, historical substance and a newly enhanced public area come together.
In the Church of San Leucio Martire, the main altar is made of polychrome Carrara marble. Its interior is considered late Baroque Neapolitan Baroque from the late 18th century. A Flemish painting of the Last Supper is located above the main altar. Felline’s baronial castle dates back to the 12th century. During paving work on Piazza Castello in 2010, sections of the castle’s original moat were uncovered.
The Palazzo Trianni, formerly Palazzo D’Amore Santo Mango, features a decorated portal, a Mignano balcony, a clock tower and an inner courtyard. The congregation associated with the Chiesa dell’Immacolata “Extra Moenia” still exists and organizes the main religious celebrations during the festival days. The oldest archaeological evidence of a settlement at this site dates from no earlier than the 2nd century BC. In the Felline area, the Menhir Ninfeo together with the Menhir Terenzano is considered evidence of the area’s ancient origins.
The former course of Felline’s fortifications ran from the area around Largo Chiesa and Via Crocefisso, parallel to today’s Via Immacolata, and then northwest to today’s Largo Santa Lucia. The town’s main gate once stood at today’s Largo Santa Lucia: Porta Maggiore, Porta Santa Lucia or Porta Grande.
