San Pancrazio Salentino and its surroundings are home to sacred art, traces of early settlements, woodland and local traditions.

Sacred Art and Local History

At the Parrocchia Santi Pancrazio e Francesco d’Assisi, architecture and art history come together. The church was consecrated in 1872; its floor plan is in the shape of a Latin cross, complemented by a single-nave interior and a neoclassical façade. The main altar was made of polychrome marble by Aniello Gentile in 1750 and moved to its present location in 1970. The church also contains paintings by Salvatore Murra depicting the theological virtues of faith, hope and charity, as well as the cardinal virtues of justice and prudence.

The Chiesa di sant’Antonio da Padova offers a different historical perspective. It was probably built in 1551 on the same chapel around which the first settlement of San Pancrazio Salentino developed between the 10th and 11th centuries, and it was remodelled several times. The Chiesa della Santissima Annunziata was built in 1510 and also altered several times. It preserves the so-called Misteri: papier-mâché statues depicting various moments from the Passion of Christ, which are carried in a procession on Good Friday. The two churches date from different periods: the Annunziata was built in 1510, while Sant’Antonio da Padova was probably built in 1551.

Archaeological Traces in the Surrounding Area

Immediately east of San Pancrazio Salentino lies the Li Castelli archaeological site. The remains there include an Iron Age village of huts, which was later transformed into a fortified centre. The Grotta dell’angelo is also located nearby. The cave was originally a chamber tomb and was reused by Byzantine monks between the 7th and 11th centuries.

Woodland, Karst and Historical Uses

About 3 km from San Pancrazio Salentino lies the Santuario di Sant’Antonio alla macchia, surrounded by a pine forest covering approximately 37 hectares. A natural karst cave is located near the sanctuary. It was initially used as monastic accommodation and later as an underground oil mill.
