Chateau brings together nature observation, medieval history and active experiences within a compact narrative setting. The medieval square tower, the parish church of San Nicola and the visitor centre of Mont Avic Nature Park give the village distinct points of interest. Added to these are the hike to Lago Vercoche and the Moulin cross-country skiing loop.

Chateau and its medieval traces

The medieval square tower in Chateau was built in the 11th century on the initiative of the Lords of Bard. In the 12th and 14th centuries, it served as an observation post. After suffering damage in 1311, the tower was restored in 1320. These clearly distinguishable periods make the building an illustrative focal point for anyone interested not only in the landscape during their stay, but also in the history of the village.

Another historical focal point is the parish church of San Nicola. It was rebuilt and extended between 1728 and 1732 by the master builder Giovanni Ferro (Jean Fer). Its furnishings include a painted and gilded Baroque wooden altar by Giovanni Battista Gilardi dating from 1741. San Nicola was probably the chapel of the castle. The tower points to its medieval use as an observation post, while San Nicola, with its 18th-century reconstruction and the Baroque altar from 1741, adds a later historical accent.

Mont Avic Nature Park and the Dondena Valley

The visitor centre of Mont Avic Nature Park is located in the Fraz Chateau district of Champorcher. It was established in Villa Biamonti, a building constructed at the beginning of the 20th century as a tourist residence. The visitor centre illustrates the particularly interesting geological and morphological features of the Dondena Valley with photographs, found objects, dynamic models and thematic maps.

The Chateau–Lago Vercoche hike begins in Chateau and leads to Lago Vercoche. It therefore provides a clear opportunity for an active day. The Moulin cross-country skiing loop complements the range of activity-focused experiences. It runs for a total length of 5 km between the Château and Chardonney districts. The different route layouts help you distinguish between a hike with a fixed destination and a loop trail between two districts.

Landscape and destinations in the surrounding area

The area around Chateau includes several prominent landscape features: Col di Courtil, Monte Glacier, the summit of Monte Belpla and Monte Marzo.

Castles are also among the destinations around Chateau. These include Castello di Issogne, Castello di Verrès and Castello di Saint-Germain. The Museo delle Alpi Nel Forte is another attraction.
