Basciano: Churches, History and Trails at Gran Sasso
Accommodation in Basciano
Basciano combines historic traces, distinctive churches and trails through the landscape of Abruzzo. The town lies on a hill spur above the valleys of the Vomano and Maone rivers and offers views of the Gran Sasso mountain range. Those looking for a holiday apartment as a base for culture, regional cuisine and hiking experiences will find various starting points here for planning their trip.
Historic Centre and Sacred Art
The final section of the Teramo–Basciano stage ends in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele in the historic centre. The parish church of San Flaviano is also located there, in the town centre next to Porta Penta; it is overlooked by the Torre di San Giorgio. The church has been documented since 1073 and was rebuilt in the 16th century. Its furnishings include a bronze portal with reliefs depicting Saint Flavian and evangelical scenes, a 16th-century baptismal font and two paintings of Saint Flavian and Saint Roch. The casing of an organ built by Adriano Federi in 1760 has also been preserved. The organ pipes were apparently sold in the 1970s.
Further insights into the local sacred art can be found at Santa Maria a Porto Lungo and Sant'Agostino. Santa Maria a Porto Lungo has a 17th-century wooden Baroque altar with gilded decorations. Its ceiling is completely covered with majolica tiles featuring geometric patterns and stylised depictions of animals; the wooden portal is divided into 48 panels. The church of Sant'Agostino houses statues of Saint Augustine, Saint Peter Martyr, Saint Anne and Saint Anthony of Padua. The Romanesque church of Santa Maria ad Portum Longum probably dates from the 14th century.
Archaeological Traces and Trails
The history also stretches far back beyond the town centre. The San Rustico archaeological site lies near the confluence of the Mavone and Vomano rivers, in an open area covered in lush vegetation. The vicus of San Rustico was an ancient settlement with numerous houses built along the Via Cecilia. The remains of the walls and castle of Basciano also show that the town was a fortified village in the Middle Ages.
For active days, route B of the Cammino Teramano offers a clearly described trail from Basciano to Bisenti. It passes through the Castel Cerreto Regional Nature Reserve, is 15 kilometres long and has a stated duration of 3 hours and 15 minutes. The final section of the Teramo–Basciano stage has a different focus because it ends in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele. When choosing your accommodation, you can therefore weigh up whether to focus on the historic town, a hiking stage or a combination of both travel ideas.
Prosciutto, Festivals and Local Traditions
A culinary speciality is Prosciutto di Basciano. It is made from the haunch of mature pigs, carefully matured and dried by the air coming from Gran Sasso. The Sagra del Prosciutto di Basciano began in 1968 and reached its 57th edition in 2026. At the 2026 festival, local cured ham that had been matured for more than 18 months was served in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele. The Abruzzese dell’Organetto Ddu’ Botte Festival also includes the historic Ddu’ Botte competition for the Abruzzese organetto.
Since 2001, in the hamlet of Azzinano, artists from all over Italy have been painting the walls of houses with scenes depicting children's games. These motifs can provide families with their own cultural discovery opportunity, without requiring the visit to follow a specific daily itinerary. Local traditions also include a ceremony in which girls carry traditional Canestrelle on their heads, enter a church and present harvested grain to the Madonna di Porto Lungo. The Basciano–Bisenti stage also includes a wine tasting with local wines: in even-numbered years it takes place on the last Sunday in August, and in odd-numbered years on the first Sunday in September.
