Scanzano combines historic buildings, a distinctive pilgrimage tradition and trails through the mountainous surroundings. Those looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home can choose the village according to their own interests: culture travelers can discover churches and medieval traces, while active days on the Grande Cammino della Brigantessa can be combined with a viewpoint and an archaeological landscape.

Castello and churches as historic points of interest

The building known as the “Castello” stands at an altitude of 925 m at the southern tip of the long ridge on which the village of Scanzano is located. It is the village’s most important viewpoint. From there, the 360-degree view extends across large parts of the municipal area of Sante Marie and over a considerable part of the neighboring municipality of Tagliacozzo. To the southwest, the wooded Simbruini mountains limit the view, while on the opposite side is the ridge of Monte Faito.

The construction history of the Castello also makes Scanzano noteworthy for visitors interested in history. Based on their technical characteristics, the oldest masonry phases are predominantly dated to the 13th and 14th centuries. They therefore mostly belong to the period after the Normans and the Catalogus Baronum. As early as 1187, Scanzano and Sante Marie were jointly recorded in the Catalogo dei Baroni, commissioned by Guglielmo II il Buono, as fiefs of the De Pontibus family, which had granted them as a fief to Giovanni Duca.

The local church landscape includes the parish church of Scanzano and the Chiesa S.S. Cipriano e Giustina. The parish church houses a wooden statue of Saint Athanasius, a work by Salvatore Conti of Sulmona. The Chiesa S.S. Cipriano e Giustina was built after the 1915 earthquake and furnished with architectural elements from other old churches that had collapsed or were no longer in use. Three Renaissance stone portals shape the interior of its three naves.

Pilgrimage tradition and trails through the surroundings

A short distance outside Scanzano lies the Chiesa di Santa Maria. During the pilgrimage tradition known as “le passate”, it is a pilgrimage destination from 5:00 p.m. on August 14 until 6:00 p.m. on August 15. This clearly defined period may be important for travel planning if you would like to combine your stay with an experience connected to local tradition.

For active exploration, the Grande Cammino della Brigantessa offers different trail conditions. The third stage ends in the center of Scanzano after a steep descent. From the town center, the trail initially follows the Cammino dei Briganti for about 1 km before continuing downhill toward San Donato on a comfortable path. These two details help you plan accommodation and your daily schedule according to your own preferences, without separating the historic and scenic destinations from one another.

Another point of interest is the Area Archeologica on the southern slope of Monte Faito between Scanzano and Santo Stefano. Together with the Castello, the churches and the historical traditions, it forms a destination where architectural history, religious tradition and trails through the surrounding area come together.

Scanzano as a starting point for your accommodation search

A holiday apartment in Scanzano is particularly suitable for travel plans focused on the village itself and its history. If, on the other hand, you would like to include various places in the surrounding area in your search, you can also consider Villavallelonga, Cansano, Santi, Barete, Lucoli, Paganica, Massa D'albe and Preturo as additional destinations. This allows you to adapt your choice of accommodation to the desired balance between local history, views, trails and regional exploration.
