Opi combines impressive natural landscapes with a remarkable history. Val Fondillo in particular makes the area appealing to travelers who want to combine scenery, wildlife and culture on their trip. There are also museums, historic religious buildings and viewpoints that make a variety of day plans possible.

Val Fondillo as a nature experience

The Val Fondillo–Valico Passaggio dell'Orso route is designated as Park Trail F2. It begins at the Val Fondillo car park and ends at Valico Passaggio dell'Orso. The trail follows the fish-rich Fondillo River, whose clear waters flow into the Sangro. Along the route, lush riverside vegetation with willows and landscapes surrounded by beautiful beech forests shape the scenery.

Val Fondillo itself is a glacier valley running along the Fondillo River and is rich in springs. It is also home to one of the five sites in the Foresta Vetusta recognized as UNESCO heritage. With a little luck, hikers may spot the Marsican brown bear along the F2 trail. This possibility is one of the special natural features that define the character of the valley, without every hike having to turn into a wildlife-watching excursion.

Chamois, viewpoints and the mountains

In Opi's historic center, the Centro Visita del Camoscio di Opi uses information panels and dioramas to provide information about the Apennine chamois. From a viewpoint near the museum, visitors can observe chamois living in a semi-free state in an adjacent wildlife area.

Another viewpoint is the Belvedere di Opi. It lies outside the historic center and in front of the old Borgo. From there, a panoramic view of Abruzzo National Park opens up: from Monte Marsicano on the left, across Monte Greco, Monte Amaro and Monte Petroso, to Camosciara, as well as the entire surrounding valley. Anyone planning a trip with varied interests can alternate nature watching and such landscape views with cultural sightseeing.

History and culture in Opi

The Centro Visita di Val Fondillo is dedicated to the ancient history of the woodland landscape and the people who lived there. The exhibition tour spans the period from prehistory to the intensive use of the forests in the last century and also illustrates the ongoing changes brought about by humans. The Regio Tratturo Pescasseroli-Candela also runs through Val Fondillo, one of the most extensive “grass roads,” as Gabriele D’Annunzio called these routes.

The Museo Archeologico in the Opi area preserves parts of the finds from the Val Fondillo necropolis. These include remains of grave goods, weapons and ceramics. The “C’era una Volta…” museum tells the story of the Opi community in a private space managed by the Pro Loco. Everyday objects, household items and preserved tools illustrate past customs and ways of life.

The churches also add to the cultural picture. Santa Maria Assunta lies halfway between the new center and the historic center. The church was damaged several times by earthquakes and rebuilt in its present form in the 17th century. Its bell tower, restored in 1556, still points to the Romanesque structure of the church, which was built in the 12th century. Near the main square stands the chapel of San Giovanni Battista, built at the beginning of the 17th century during the Baroque period by Vincenzo Rossi, a local nobleman. Recent restoration work brought wooden decorations, stucco and polychrome marble to light.
