Introdacqua combines a distinctive hilltop setting in the Valle Peligna with traces of a long settlement history and routes to Monte Genzana. The town lies where the Contra and Sant’Antonio valleys meet, surrounded by the Plaja and Cerrone mountains. This offers different ways to plan a trip: local history and sacred art, nature, or mountain activities. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can first decide which of these themes you want to shape your vacation.

Landscape and nature around Introdacqua

The Monte Genzana e Alto Gizio Regional Nature Reserve extends across the municipalities of Pettorano sul Gizio, Cansano and Introdacqua. Apennine chamois, Marsican brown bears and wolves live in the reserve. For nature lovers, the protected area offers a distinct perspective on wildlife alongside the town’s history.

A trekking route leads from Introdacqua through the Sant’Antonio valley to Monte Genzana and the Rifugio Forca Ristoppia, located at an altitude of about 1,800 metres. Seasonal conditions and access may vary. Check both before setting out. The ascent of Monte Genzana from Introdacqua offers views of the Conca di Sulmona, Morrone, Maiella, Piano delle Cinquemiglia, Piana del Fucino, Sirente and Gran Sasso. Visibility of these landmarks depends on conditions.

History and culture

The first pre-Roman settlement was on the summit of Monte Plaja, at the site Antonio De Nino called “Piano della Civitella.” The megalithic walls of Piano della Civitella form a fortification dated to after 700 and before 301 BC. Construction of the medieval Dongione di Introdacqua began much later: the tower dates to a building phase starting in 1173. The historic bell tower is built from local stone.

The Museo Regionale dell’Emigrante “Pascal D’Angelo” is housed in a wing of the historic Palazzo Trasmondi and is recognised by the Regione Abruzzo. It explores Pascal D’Angelo’s life alongside the history of Abruzzese emigration to America. In this way, the museum brings together an individual biography and a broader theme in regional history.

The mother church of SS. Annunziata preserves Renaissance frescoes, an 18th-century painting of Saint Biagio and the relics of the patron saint, San Feliciano Martire. The statue “Madonna Che Vele” is kept in the Church of Santissima Trinità. On Easter morning, four young people carry it to the Risen Christ as part of the “Volo” presentation. The staging of this annual event may vary.

Experiences for different kinds of travel days

In Introdacqua, a donkey trek suitable for families leads from the forest to the castle. Booking and scheduling are available on request. This adds another way to spend time outdoors together alongside the historical attractions and mountain hikes.

Choose a holiday apartment to suit your interests

When choosing a holiday apartment in Introdacqua, consider what you want your vacation to focus on: the historical and religious sites are well suited to a cultural getaway; if you mainly want to spend time outdoors, take seasonal conditions and access to the trekking route into account when planning.
