Barisciano lies at an altitude of 940 metres on the slopes of a wooded hill. Mountain ridges, picturesque valleys and inland plateaus shape the surrounding landscape and provide a distinctive setting for the town. The area is also marked by traces of medieval fortifications, churches with different building histories, and trails that cater to a range of interests. When planning your trip, you can choose between culture, nature and peaceful outdoor exploration.

Woodland trails and different ways to explore

The short “Nella Selva dei Frati” trail runs through an oak forest and offers opportunities for birdwatching. The Via Mariana offers a different experience: this prayer path, surrounded by woodland, leads to a chapel dedicated to Saint Roch. Those interested in a clearly described ascent can take the Sentiero dei Rifugi Montani. It starts in Barisciano’s central square and climbs to the former monastery of San Colombo at an altitude of 1,088 metres. The site houses a park information centre. The three routes offer different experiences: woodland and birdwatching, a prayer path, or a climb to a named destination.

Castle ruins and churches steeped in history

The surviving remains of Barisciano Castle are considered an important example of medieval fortifications in Abruzzo. Alongside the castle, the Chapel of San Rocco preserves 16th-century frescoes. The town’s churches also tell the story of different eras: Santa Maria di Capo di Serra, also known as Madonna del Buon Consiglio, is considered Barisciano’s oldest church. Its existence is documented as far back as 1300.

The Church of San Flaviano was rebuilt in 1730 after being damaged in the 1703 earthquake. Inside, there is a baptismal font dated 1571. The former Church of the Immaculate Conception of the “Trinità” offers a different perspective on the town’s history: Prince Giulio Cesare Caracciolo had it built as a family church beside his palace in the 17th century. Its rectangular floor plan and four altars give the building a clearly defined architectural character. Barisciano’s fountain adds a precise date to this historical picture: it was built in 1876 under Mayor Giulio Blasetti.

Plant life at the San Colombo complex

The area’s plant life offers another way to explore the surroundings. The Museo del Fiore explains the variety of plants found in the park’s protected area. At the San Colombo complex, the park’s botanical garden cultivates ex situ the plant species most representative of the protected area. The Museo del Fiore is also located in the complex, which houses the information desk. The complex is accessible to people with disabilities; check the latest visitor information before your visit.

Local tradition and choosing a holiday apartment

The Sagra della Patata is traditionally held on the last weekend of August. The event celebrates the potato and its use in cooking. If you plan to attend, check the programme for the relevant year before your trip.

If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Barisciano, your preferred kind of getaway can guide your decision: are you most interested in castle ruins and churches, woodland trails and birdwatching, or the park’s plant life? This can help you match your interests with the different experiences Barisciano offers.
