Bagno combines a striking mountain landscape, a layered history and local traditions with special nature and culinary experiences. Those planning a trip to Bagno can choose between cultural discoveries, a visit to Lago di San Raniero, regional cuisine and mountain-related activities. This makes the area suitable for planning a holiday where not every day has to look the same.

Mountain landscape between several valleys

The Monte Ocre–Monte Cagno mountain group is part of the geographical context. It is approximately 16 kilometres long and up to around 7 kilometres wide. Geomorphologically and geographically, it separates the Aquila basin and the Roio plain from the Lucoli Valley and the Campo Felice plain. This clearly defined landscape makes Monte Ocre an important reference point for visitors who want to connect Bagno with mountain-related activities.

Monte Ocre is regarded as one of the Apennine mountains particularly suited to ski mountaineering. For the ascent from Ripa di Bagno, an out-and-back route along the same trail is proposed. As an alternative, a circular route with an ascent along the ridge and a descent through the valleys is recommended. When planning your trip, you can therefore first decide whether to focus on a classic route or the proposed circular tour. You should carefully take the respective route details into account when making specific plans.

Civita di Bagno and traces of history

Those interested in historic sites will find a special point of reference in Civita di Bagno: the village is identified with the ancient episcopal city of Forcona. In the middle Aterno valley basin, near the hamlet of Civita di Bagno, there is also the Civitas Sancti Maximi archaeological site. Roman structures are still preserved and visible beneath the former cathedral of San Massimo.

These places represent different layers of history that can be combined when planning a trip: the ancient episcopal city, the archaeological site and the Roman structures beneath the former cathedral. Would you mainly like to discover historic sites, try regional specialities or include the mountain and lake landscape? The answer will help you choose a holiday apartment that suits your personal travel programme, without limiting the days to a single theme.

Lago di San Raniero and regional specialities

Lago di San Raniero lies between the settlements of Civita di Bagno and San Benedetto. Its outflow is located at the extreme northeastern edge and flows into the Aterno, although it is separated from the river by human intervention. This creates an isolated habitat with an unusual landscape character. A tradition of sport fishing at the lake has been documented since the early 1950s. The local anglers’ association traces its origins back to 1951; the first licence for sport fishing was granted by the Province of L’Aquila in 1972.

Cipolla di Bagno is also part of the local character. The ecotype has a slightly flattened shape, a golden skin and white, almost translucent flesh. The onion has a slightly sweet taste, is firm and has an intense aroma tending towards sweetness. It is cultivated in the Aquila basin in Bagno, Civita di Bagno and Monticchio, which belong to the city of L’Aquila, as well as partly in the municipality of Ocre. Cultivation takes place on flat, irrigated soils; as a Slow Food Presidio, Cipolla di Bagno also represents a clearly recognisable regional speciality.

Traditions throughout the year

The patronal feast of San Raniero takes place every year on the last Sunday in June in the settlements that now make up Bagno. The celebration includes a procession in which statues of saints are carried on people’s shoulders. If you schedule your trip for this date, a local tradition will take centre stage alongside the landscape and history. At other times of year, the historic sites, Lago di San Raniero, regional cuisine and mountain-related activities remain independent reasons to get to know Bagno better.
