Pizzoferrato combines the distinctive character of a mountain village with a varied landscape in the Majella National Park. The original settlement is situated on a rocky ridge that drops steeply on three sides. The historic part is also located on a rocky hilltop. Extensive beech and pine forests surround the village and give a stay here a distinctly nature-oriented character.

Rocks, forests and trails around Pizzoferrato

Those who enjoy exploring on foot will find various options for planning their trip. A nature trail through the beech forest leads to Scrimacavallo at an altitude of 1,185 metres. There is also a modern tourist centre above Pizzoferrato, from which numerous nature trails start. In summer, the Valle Del Sole in San Domenico is a meeting point for hiking and horse-riding excursions. This makes it possible to tailor your stay more specifically to forest landscapes, high-altitude areas or physical activity, depending on your personal interests.

The Valle Del Sole also offers opportunities for other activities: free climbing is possible there. In winter, visitors can use a cross-country ski trail, the atmospheric La Mandra circular route and ski lifts in the Valle Del Sole area. Pizzoferrato also has a piste for alpine skiing. Those looking for a holiday apartment or holiday house can therefore decide as early as the trip-planning stage whether nature trails, climbing activities or winter sports should be the main focus.

Churches and history on the rocky ridge

The ancient church of Santa Maria del Girone stands on a large rocky cliff above the built-up centre of Pizzoferrato. The remains of the ancient castle of Pizzoferrato are located above the church. Together, these sites tell the story of the mountain village’s distinctive historical character, without requiring the landscape and buildings to be considered separately.

The parish church of San Rocco is also part of the village’s character. It was built in the second half of the 19th century after the former parish church was demolished. The Chiesa di San Domenico in Silvis is still in use and is a pilgrimage destination. The Grotta di San Domenico, which was the saint’s old place of refuge, is also located among the rocks of the mountain of the same name. Culture enthusiasts can therefore explore several different aspects: the historic settlement, churches, castle ruins and a place rooted in religious tradition.

Excursions and local impressions

About 2 kilometres from Pizzoferrato, the Centro Nazionale Avifauna “La Casa degli Angeli” in Località La Chiarenza takes in wild birds in need, cares for them and rehabilitates them. This attraction complements the landscape experience with an insight into the treatment of injured or vulnerable animals. The second edition of the Sagra della Patata Rossa also took place in Pizzoferrato, featuring food stalls, musical entertainment and traditional games. As a past event, the festival forms part of the local culture and reveals another side of the village alongside its nature and history.

Planning the right stay

When looking for accommodation in Pizzoferrato, it is worth clarifying your preferred travel pace. Nature trails and forest landscapes favour a stay with plenty of time outdoors, while Santa Maria del Girone, San Rocco, San Domenico in Silvis and the castle ruins provide cultural highlights. In winter, the facilities in the Valle Del Sole and the alpine ski piste are additional options. This allows you to choose your holiday apartment or holiday house according to the experiences you want to shape your trip, without reducing nature, local history and seasonal activities to a single type of holiday.
