Mezzano, a hamlet of Miglianico, offers a tangible introduction to architectural and church history: the Chiesa di Sant’Antonio Abate stands in the village, while the wider municipal area includes other historic buildings from different periods. At the church in Mezzano, brickwork, interior design and its former use as a cemetery chapel shape its story. Elsewhere in the municipality, other traces lead to a medieval mention and to a historic residence that was built from the 11th century onwards as a defensive and observation fortress. When planning your trip, the first question is whether you are mainly interested in the church in the village or would also like to explore Miglianico’s other architectural stories.

The Chiesa di Sant’Antonio Abate in Mezzano

The Chiesa di Sant’Antonio Abate is in the village of Mezzano, in Miglianico, in Contrada Cerreto. It was built in the 16th century as a cemetery chapel. Its rectangular brick façade is topped by a crowning cornice and a pediment. The portal’s surround, with its small diamond-shaped points, adds a delicate accent. Thus, the exterior brings together a clear geometric form and a finely detailed ornament.

The interior is also defined by brickwork: the single-nave space lies beneath two sloping roof sections with imitation wooden beams. The interior walls are entirely faced with exposed bricks, which form a pattern of blind arches on the chancel wall. The façade, portal and chancel wall thus show different ways of shaping the same material. Visitors interested in architecture can distinguish the forms, surfaces and spatial arrangement in these details, rather than viewing the church solely in terms of its date of construction.

Another turning point in the building’s history came in 1973, when the church was transferred to the parish community in exchange for a chapel in Miglianico’s cemetery. These two details describe different periods. The 16th century marks its construction as a cemetery chapel; 1973 marks its later transfer as part of an exchange. In this way, architectural history is linked to a specific event in the community.

Other historic buildings in the municipal area

The Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo broadens the historical perspective. The Rationes of 1324–1325 record it in the municipal area of Miglianico as the “Chiesa di Sant’Angelo.” The Barons Valignani rebuilt it in the 16th century. These two dates mark different stages: its early mention under a former name and a later reconstruction. In 2018, three new artistic doors dedicated to Santa Croce, San Pantaleone and San Michele Arcangelo were inaugurated at the church.

The historic residence “Masci” tells a different architectural story. It was built from the 11th century onwards as a defensive and observation fortress and was rebuilt by the Barons Valignani in 1515. Around 1950, Francesco Bonfanti and Filippo Masci rebuilt it once again, with Gio Ponti playing a major role. The same bricks from the ruins of the old castle were used. Unlike San Michele, where the early mention, reconstruction and inauguration of the doors mark different stages, Masci brings together its original function, several reconstructions and the reuse of building materials.
