Sauðárkrókur – History and Fjord Views
Accommodation in Sauðárkrókur
Sauðárkrókur combines vivid insights into Iceland’s history with experiences around Skagafjörður. At the exhibition 1238: The Battle of Iceland, you can immerse yourself in Viking battles and historical events through virtual reality. Other highlights include an outdoor swimming pool, views across the fjord from the Nafir hills and opportunities to visit the island of Drangey. When choosing a holiday apartment, it may therefore be important to consider whether you want to focus your trip primarily on culture, nature or water activities.
History brought to life
The interactive, immersive exhibition 1238: The Battle of Iceland focuses on the Age of the Sturlungs, from 1220 to 1264. Virtual reality brings Viking battles and historical events to life as an experience, rather than presenting them solely through texts and objects. The exhibition welcomes visitors of all ages and is designed for individuals as well as families, groups of friends and school groups. If you’re looking for different ways to explore history with children, this offers a specific destination featuring digital storytelling.
The Sauðárkrókur tourist information office is also located on the ground floor. Safnahúsið is another place to discover culture: it houses the Skagafjörður District Library and District Archive, as well as the Skagafjörður Art Museum. This means you can explore historical topics and art as different focuses for your stay. At the 1238 exhibition, Grána Bistro serves a bistro menu featuring local ingredients.
Fjord, birds and trails
The Nafir hills above Sauðárkrókur feature ancient marine terraces. From a viewing platform there, you can look out across the fjord. Nafir is also home to Hlíðarendavöllur, a 9-hole golf course that is among Iceland’s longest and most impressive. If you’d rather explore on foot, there are numerous hiking trails in Sauðárkrókur and the surrounding area. The views, golf and hiking offer different ways to experience the landscape, whether actively or from above.
The exhibition Puffin & Friends 360° explores another aspect of nature. It focuses on puffins in Skagafjörður and the effects of global warming on the ecosystem. Virtual reality, staged displays and films present the topics in different ways. For an outdoor excursion, you could also visit Áshildarholtsvatn, in the vicinity of Sauðárkrókur, which is home to a diverse birdlife and features information boards about birds.
Just east of Sauðárkrókur lies nearby Borgarsandur, a black sand beach with dunes and marram grass. Visitors can park at the western end, walk along the beach and enjoy views across Skagafjörður. If you’d prefer a walk by the water to a day at an exhibition, you can make this a separate stop in nature on your trip.
Swimming pool and trips to Drangey
Locals use the Sauðárkrókur swimming pool for training and public swimming. It also serves campers and travellers in Skagafjörður. The outdoor pool measures 25 × 8 metres and ranges from 0.9 to 2.7 metres deep. Two whirlpools with air massage offer a more compact water experience; the water is about 39 °C and 41 °C, respectively. With its different pools, the swimming pool offers another option alongside hikes and cultural visits.
Boat trips to Drangey depart from the Sauðárkrókur marina. An excursion to Drangey combines sightseeing, birdwatching, sailing and hiking, and also begins in Sauðárkrókur. If you’d like to enjoy several of these activities, you can make them a focus of your plans without treating the excursion as interchangeable with a museum or beach visit.
The swimming pool offers another distinct option. Other places in this selection: Hauganes, Húsavík, Laxamýri, Miðgarðar, Lundarbrekka, Laufás, Hjalteyri and Einarsstaðir.
