Kisrécse has a distinctive cultural focus: an international artists’ colony, artistic offerings and locally protected buildings give the village a clear identity. At the same time, Zala, as the wider destination, offers further themes, from landscape and nature to spas and historic sites. When planning your trip, you can distinguish between local cultural interests and a broader perspective on Zala.

Artistic offerings in Kisrécse

Every summer, artists from several countries work together at the Ludvig Nemzetközi Művésztelep. The number of participants ranges from 30 to 42. Their collaborative work makes the artists’ colony a distinctive cultural feature of the village.

At the Kendlimajor Művészeti Szabadiskola, adults can take art courses from April to October, including painting and enamel techniques. Creative camps for children are held in the second half of July. The schedules offer different options: adult courses run over several months, while the camps take place within a shorter period. Check the exact dates before travelling if you plan to arrange your stay around one of these offerings.

Protected architectural heritage

On Dózsa György út, both the chapel and the Millenniumi emlékmű are part of Kisrécse’s locally protected architectural heritage. Both buildings offer another perspective on the village: alongside its artistic offerings, local architecture and commemorative heritage also take centre stage.

Zala as a wider destination

In Zala, the Kotsy-vízimalom in Zalaszántó demonstrates a 390 cm overshot waterwheel mechanism in operation. The wine-growing landscape is another regional feature: the Zalai Borvidék developed on the slopes and uplands of the Zalai-dombság and on the northwestern slopes of the Keszthelyi-hegység. It comprises two wine-growing districts and 38 settlements.

Kis-Balaton is Zala’s largest body of water, covers 14,745 hectares and is under strict protection. It is also the setting for István Fekete’s classic novels “Tüskevár” and “Téli berek”. The ruins of Rezi vár offer a different connection to the landscape and history: they stand at the summit of a 418-metre-high dolomite ridge on Meleg-hegy, overlooking the Zalaszántó Basin.

For a seasonal taste of the landscape, Azáleás-völgy in the Alsóerdő area of Zalaegerszeg is a special spring attraction for day-trippers. Historic buildings also make their mark: Festetics kastély in Keszthely is Hungary’s fourth-largest palace and has 101 rooms.
