Lenti brings together church art, traces of a castle, thermal pools and a seasonal forest railway—four different ways to shape your stay. St. Michael’s Parish Church showcases painting and architecture, while the thermal baths put the focus on water and greenery. The forest railway adds a railway theme of its own. When choosing a holiday apartment, it is therefore worth asking which side of Lenti you would like to define your stay: cultural history, bathing or seasonal train rides.

Church Art and Traces of a Castle

St. Michael’s Parish Church in Lenti was completed in 1698 and dedicated to St. Michael. Frescoes by István Dorffmeister Jr. adorn the chancel and the first bay of the three-bay nave. They extend from the chancel to the beginning of the nave. The church thus combines wall paintings with the layout of its interior—a tangible point of interest for anyone interested in sacred architecture and art.

At Lenti Castle, the former moat and a bastion can be seen. Medieval remains lie in the cellar of a barn built in the 18th century using parts of the castle. Here, visible castle features meet medieval traces within a later building. The castle therefore reveals several historical layers, not just the visible remains of the moat and bastion.

Thermal Baths and Forest Railway

Lenti Thermal Baths comprise five outdoor pools, three indoor pools, a partially covered hydromassage pool and an eight-hectare green area. The largest pool covers 1,340 m² and features a white-water channel, neck massage jets, massage benches and a 74-metre-long Anaconda slide. This makes it possible to distinguish the complex as a whole from the special features of its largest pool: the pools and green space provide the setting, while the slide and massage areas add individual highlights. This is a distinct focus for your stay, alongside the town’s cultural and historical attractions.

The 33-kilometre forest railway line runs between Lenti and Kistolmács, with passenger trains operating on it. Scheduled trains run seasonally from late April to late September. Check the current timetable before travelling. Publications from 2019 also mention exhibitions on forestry and railway history at Lenti Forest Railway Station: the exhibition rooms are described as hosting “Forest and tree, Zala forest, treasure of Göcsej,” an exhibition about forestry, sawmills and railway history. A 2019 visitor brochure mentions a model of the forest railway in the waiting room and an interactive map in the railway history exhibition.

Zala as a Regional Setting

The wider destination of Zala offers additional landscape and cultural themes. The Zalai Borvidék wine region developed on the slopes and plateaus of the Zalai-dombság hills and the northwestern slopes of the Keszthelyi-hegység mountains; it includes two wine-growing districts and 38 settlements. Kis-Balaton is Zala’s largest body of water, strictly protected and covering 14,745 hectares. It is also the setting for István Fekete’s classic novels Tüskevár and Téli berek. Wine country and protected wetlands broaden the regional perspective with themes distinct from Lenti’s church art, thermal baths and forest railway.

When choosing a holiday apartment in Lenti, these differences can help you decide what you would like to focus on: church art and traces of a castle offer cultural history, the thermal baths provide a bathing experience, and the forest railway offers a seasonal train ride. If the railway is part of your plans, schedule your trip during its operating season and check the current timetable.
