At the Kotsy-vízimalom in Zalaszántó, visitors can see a 390-centimetre overshot waterwheel mechanism in operation. The castle and mill represent different kinds of cultural experience: on one hand, the scale of a large historic building; on the other, a working piece of machinery.

Zala’s landscapes and seasons offer other destinations. In spring, the Azáleás-völgy in the Alsóerdő of Zalaegerszeg is an attraction for day-trippers. The ruins of Rezi vár stand on the summit of a 418-metre-high dolomite ridge on Meleg-hegy, overlooking the Zalaszántó Basin. Spring blossoms and views from a ridge offer two very different nature and landscape experiences.

The Kápolnapuszta Bivalyrezervátum hosts a water buffalo festival every year in May or June; the date may vary from year to year. A 1.5-kilometre walking trail with resting places and viewpoints runs through the reserve. During opening hours, visitors can pet tame animals every day. Another distinct attraction in Zala is Lake Hévíz: it is the world’s largest biologically active natural thermal lake.
