Villagescape and Nature

Apátistvánfalva is part of Őrség National Park. The village has a characteristic scattered settlement structure: the individual houses are mostly situated separately on hilltops or slopes, surrounded by fields, mown orchards and meadows.

Meadows with rare plants have been preserved in Apátistvánfalva, including a subspecies of zergeboglár, the pink sömöröskosbor, the purple broad-leaved ujjaskosbor and the nationally rare struccpáfrány. In the lime-avoiding Scots pine forests, juniper, downy birch, clubmosses, various wintergreen species, as well as black and red bilberries, grow among others.

Paths through the Forest

The Gyantászok útja nature trail is 4 km long and is not a circular route. It begins and ends at the Ökoturisztikai Információs Centrum in Apátistvánfalva. Nine stations explain the flora and fauna of the forests of Vendvidék, selection forestry, resin extraction and the importance of forests.

The fourth hiking route leads from Apátistvánfalva via Zsidahegy, Zsida, Lake Hársas and Farkasfa back to Apátistvánfalva, highlighting Apátistvánfalva’s scattered settlement structure.

Culture and History

The Határőr Emlékhely can be visited by prior registration. The exhibition presents the everyday life of the border guard, with a realistically furnished sleeping quarters, an armoury and the stable of the mounted border guard unit.

A large, listed church was built in Apátistvánfalva in 1785 in honour of Harding Szent István. In Apátistvánfalva, Harding Szent István has been commemorated every year on 16 July since 1683 as part of the church consecration festival.

The characteristic Slovenian dialect is still preserved and used in everyday life and at events dedicated to maintaining the cultural heritage in Apátistvánfalva.

Information on Site

In 2013, a new ecotourism information centre was opened in Apátistvánfalva. It was operated by the Őrség National Park Directorate and served to provide information to tourists arriving in the region.
