Kisvárda Castle has been part of Hungary’s National Heritage since 1990 and is considered an outstanding monument both architecturally and historically. It is currently closed to visitors due to ongoing renovation work. If the castle would be your main reason for visiting, take this restriction into account when planning.

The Bódi László “Cipő” Emléksétány on Mátyás király utca offers another form of remembrance. This memorial walk commemorates the singer and songwriter Bódi László “Cipő,” who has many connections to Kisvárda. Its establishment on 14 October 2023 gives this memorial site a specific date. The castle and memorial walk thus represent different themes in Kisvárda’s cultural history.

Festival dates and venues

The Határon Túli Magyar Színházak Fesztiválja has been held in Kisvárda every year since its first edition in 1989. Around 40 productions are staged over the ten festival days, most of them at Művészetek Háza. The festival is therefore a clearly defined event to consider when planning your dates.

Other venues include Várszínpad and Kamaraterem. Kamaraterem opened in 2002 for the festival. These different stages are part of the festival setting, but they do not constitute a regular sightseeing tour. A short loop around Vár-tó

For an active interlude, there is a running track around Vár-tó. Its Rekortan surface and 470-metre length make the route clear: it is a short, manageable run rather than a longer route. This may be useful when planning if you want to include exercise as well as culture.

Vaja’s Renaissance Vay Castle houses the Vay-Ádám Museum Collection of the Hungarian National Museum. Another historical highlight is in Tiszadob: Andrássy Castle was built between 1880 and 1885 in the French Gothic style. It was commissioned by former Prime Minister Andrássy Gyula, and the plans were drawn up by Alpár Ignác. Also near Tiszadob, a 1,000-hectare nature reserve encompasses oxbow lakes, floodplain forests and grassland. A large heron colony of 80 to 90 pairs nests in Tölgyes Forest.

The region’s landscape includes everything from marshes to protected areas. The Bátorligeti primeval marsh, covering around 53 hectares, is strictly protected and preserves particularly comprehensively various stages in the vegetation and landscape history of the Alföld Plain. Near Csaroda, Nyíres-tó and Báb tava are distinctive peat bogs dating back to the Ice Age. These places broaden the picture of Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg to include natural history alongside its historical themes.

The northern Hungarian section of the Route of Medieval Churches is also part of this regional picture. It connects 37 churches in the medieval church landscape of Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg.
