Gödöllő combines an impressive castle history with other cultural attractions and opportunities for a stroll. At its heart is the Gödöllői Királyi Kastély: its permanent exhibition tells the story of the castle in 31 rooms, from the building’s commissioning family, the Grassalkoviches, through its time as a royal summer residence and into the present day. This lets you choose a clear cultural focus for your trip and discover different chapters of the town’s history.
The Royal Palace and its distinctive rooms
A particular highlight in the palace park is the Királydombi Pavilion. It displays portraits of the leaders from the time of the Hungarian conquest and of Hungarian kings. The people depicted offer a different perspective from the palace exhibition: here, historical figures take centre stage, while the permanent exhibition covers the castle’s history across several eras. When planning your visit, you can treat these as two distinct cultural interests.
The building’s history can also be seen in individual rooms. In one wing of the south wing, Grassalkovich II Antal (1734–1794) had a theatre hall fitted out during renovations between 1782 and 1785. The hall thus points to a specific phase in the palace’s development. Later, another distinctive building was added in the upper park: in 1870, during the reign of Queen Elisabeth, the twin-winged Palm House was built there. The theatre hall and the Palm House belong to different chapters in the palace’s history, and each adds its own distinctive touch.
Town Museum, park and getting your bearings
For another cultural highlight, consider the Gödöllői Városi Múzeum. It is located in the town centre in a former grand inn built in the 1760s. The museum building itself is therefore part of the historic setting you can discover as you explore Gödöllő. The palace and the town museum offer different points of interest: the history of the palace and its rooms on the one hand, and a museum in a former inn in the town centre on the other.
A stroll in Erzsébet Park is another recommended experience. This lets you include time outdoors alongside the cultural attractions, without focusing your stay exclusively on the palace and museum. If you are planning a trip with your family, you can first decide which balance of historic sights and a walk you would like to prioritise.
For planning your journey, the “Gödöllő-Állami telepek” railway stop is another useful landmark. It is on the Hatvan–Budapest-Keleti railway line and about 900 metres from the entrance to Gödöllői Arbo-Park. This distance refers to the park entrance; it does not describe the distance to other attractions. If the railway line or Arbo-Park is important to your travel plans, you can take this reference point into account when choosing your holiday apartment.
