Szentdomonkos offers two distinct starting points for planning a holiday: the Roman Catholic church in the western part of the village and its connection to the protected landscape. The Tarnavidéki Landscape Protection Area extends to the administrative boundary of Szentdomonkos. The church, in turn, combines a Baroque classification with older structural elements and later decorative work. The focus is thus on a specific local connection and several layers of art history, while other nature and cultural themes have their own regional context in the wider destination of Heves County.

The church: Baroque design and older structural elements

The Roman Catholic church is a single-nave Baroque building. Its sanctuary and sacristy preserve a core dating from the 16th century. This allows the classification of the building to be distinguished from its older components: the Baroque description applies to the church as a building, while the older core is explicitly preserved in two parts.

The furnishings also tell of different periods. The main altarpiece depicts Saint Dominic; it was painted by Mihály Kovács in 1850. Following the 1996 renovation, frescoes adorn the sanctuary and nave. The altarpiece and frescoes are therefore distinct artistic works: one is associated with a painter and a year, while the others shape the decoration of the two church spaces after the renovation. Together, the architecture, older core and artworks form a distinct cultural and historical focus in Szentdomonkos.

Nature themes in the wider destination of Heves County

The local connection to the landscape is precisely defined: the Tarnavidéki Landscape Protection Area reaches the administrative boundary of Szentdomonkos. Another protected area in the wider destination of Heves County is the Hevesi Füves Puszták, in the southern part of Heves County. The landscape protection area covers 16,114 hectares. It was designated in 1993 and reached its present extent following expansions in 2005 and 2008.

Themed trails in the wider destination of Heves County also explore different aspects of nature. The 6.5-kilometre Ilona Valley Nature Trail along the Ilona Stream passes the geological features of the Eastern Mátra Mountains and traces of earlier ore mining. The Pély-Ludas Nature Trail introduces visitors to the grassland habitats of the Hevesi Plain. These include saline grasslands, marshes, bodies of water, scrubland, semi-natural woodland and forests, as well as their wildlife and the European roller population. Together, the trails show a range of themes: geology and mining history take centre stage in one, while habitats and wildlife feature in the other.

Culture and activities in Heves County

The wider destination of Heves County also features cultural landscapes and traditions. The Szépasszony Valley contains Eger’s largest continuous area of wine cellars; wine culture and the gastronomy associated with it are among its most important tourist attractions. Hevesi szőttes, meanwhile, is a textile heritage from Heves County associated with Heves, Mátraderecske and Bodony.

For those interested in activities, the region offers a different focus: the section of the Országos Kéktúra in Heves County includes an ascent of Kékestető, the highest point in Hungary. At Kékestető, fans of active tourism can also enjoy winter sports. The wider destination thus offers a range of interests: nature and habitats, wine and textile culture, as well as hiking and winter sports.

Choose a focus for your stay

When choosing a holiday apartment, it helps to decide first what you want to focus on.
