Water engineering and local history
Water management is also an important part of Pély’s history. The Sajfoki sluice was built in 1862, and its original commemorative plaque is still visible today. The Sajfoki inland drainage pumping station began operating in 1878 with an English steam engine. Machines made in Hungary were added to the facility in 1879. It was Hungary’s first inland drainage pumping station, remains operational to this day, and is considered a valuable part of the country’s water management and technical heritage. The sequence of dates and machines makes its development particularly clear: the English steam engine was followed by an addition, not a replacement.
Village character and birdlife
Pély’s cultural character also includes the statue of Saint John of Nepomuk and public artworks. The statue dates from the 19th century and is the village’s only monument.
