The longest organised route starting from Abasár is 56 km long. Shorter routes focus primarily on commemorating King Aba Sámuel and introducing his story. For comparison, the Abasári bortúra is 6.3 km long. This makes it possible to distinguish the routes by length without treating them as equivalent.
The history of winemaking and religious memorial sites
Kapásház preserves material evidence of winemaking in Abasár. It also presents the way of life of seasonal workers and hoeing families active around the turn of the century, as well as memorabilia from the monastery. Visits can be arranged in advance. These three themes offer different ways to explore local history: winemaking, everyday working life and monastic remembrance.
The small stone Szent János-kápolna stands at the entrance to Abasár. Every year on the first Sunday in May, local parishioners walk from the church to the chapel, where an outdoor mass is held. The present Roman Catholic church in Abasár was built in the 17th century. Together, the church, chapel and annual procession offer insight into local religious traditions, without making a hiking route the focus of your visit.
Geology and nature experiences
Kőtenger lies in Serpenyő-völgy. It is a natural formation of diverse rock blocks left behind by past volcanic activity. This geological theme complements the history of winemaking and the religious memorial sites. If you plan your excursions around their different themes, you will find several facets of Abasár side by side: landscape, culture and activity.
At Tekeres Vadaskert on the edge of Abasár, visitors can observe the wildlife of the Mátra, take part in wildlife feeding and experience the Mátra Safari. The grounds also include a garden museum. Check the current arrangements with the venue before visiting; you should also enquire in advance about access to the garden museum.
