Rajka has an identified medieval tower site in its cemetery; at the castle site dating from the Árpád period, the southern and southeastern sections of the defensive ditch are still perceptible.

Archaeological finds from Rajka include remains from the Gepid and Avar periods and indicate that the area has been settled since the Bronze Age.

The first documented mention of Rajka dates back to 1208; the first church was built in 1313, and a Protestant church around 1650.

In Roman times, Rajka was home to a watchtower positioned between Ad Flexum and Geruláta on the Limes.
