Wine and Cultural Landscape

The UNESCO World Heritage Site “Tokaj Wine Region – Historic Cultural Landscape” includes Tarcal as one of its settlements. Basilicus offers guided wine tastings that include a visit to a 200-year-old cellar; the wines tasted range from dry Furmint to Tokaji Aszú. The Basilicus Borkultúra Központ also organizes wine tours through the Tokaj-Hegyalja region. Another wine experience offered by Basilicus includes a cellar tour, information about grape varieties and wine production, and a tasting of nine wines.

Kikelet Pince operates in a distinctive cellar several hundred years old, with an adjoining maturation area, and manages 4.5 hectares of vineyards on the outskirts of Tarcal. It offers guided wine tastings with a cellar tour; advance reservation is required.

The Tarcali Bűbájos Hétvége was organized for the seventh time in 2022 by the Tarcal Wine and Culture Association. The programme of Bűbájos Hétvége 2022 included open cellars, vineyard walks, masterclasses, open-air cinema, stargazing and concerts by local bands.

Nature

Tarcali Turzó-dűlő is a nationally significant, individually designated nature reserve in Tarcal covering an area of 10.74 hectares. It protects natural loess hillside steppe vegetation as well as populations of protected and specially protected species. The nature reserve is freely accessible on foot via the field paths; for groups of more than 20 people, the visiting route must be coordinated with the nature conservation authority.

History and Sacred Sites

King Kalman’s cellar in Tarcal is documented as having existed as early as 1110. Tarcal’s Reformed Church is a 15th-century Gothic church that was being used by the Reformed congregation by 1562 at the latest. The Reformed Church held synods there in 1562 and 1564. The present-day Reformed Church of Tarcal was built in 1773–1774 in the late Baroque style.

The Roman Catholic Church of Urunk Mennybemenetele in Tarcal has Gothic origins dating from the 14th century, was rebuilt in the Baroque style in 1776, and has Rococo furnishings from the mid-18th century. Tarcal’s synagogue is privately owned and, following its restoration, is partially open to visitors as the Tarcali Galéria, where temporary exhibitions are held.

The restored Rákóczi Szüretelőház in Tarcal is open to visitors as an exhibition venue; in the future, it is also intended to serve as an event venue.

Routes and Sightseeing

The Áldó Krisztus statue consists of five granite blocks, is 8.5 metres high and weighs almost 50 tonnes. Together with the promenade surrounding it, it is a station on the more than 1,400-kilometre-long Mária Way. The Áldó Krisztus Promenade can be reached via two access paths measuring 561 metres and 377 metres respectively; it includes a staircase with 130 steps. The Tarcali Bányató near the Áldó Krisztus Promenade can be visited.

On weekends and public holidays, the municipality provides older people and visitors with reduced mobility with a free electric vehicle at the car park on Könyves-Kálmán Street for the ascent.

Route I is a 70-kilometre road cycling loop from Tokaj via Tarcal and Mád, as well as other settlements, back to Tokaj. In Tarcal, it passes the Terézia Chapel, built in 1750. The Terézia Chapel is a station on the Mária Way, which runs through Tarcal.
