Exhibitions and Architectural History in Szerencs
The Zempléni Múzeum in Szerencs displays a permanent exhibition of its postcard collection. Other permanent exhibitions present the architectural history of Szerencs Castle. Together, the displays offer two different perspectives: one focuses on the postcard collection, while the others explore the history of a local building.
The permanent exhibition “Szerencs fehér aranya” at the Szerencsi Turisztikai Központ opened on 12 March 2026. It commemorates both the technology of sugar production and the generations of people who worked there. Alongside the museum displays, it makes for a cultural programme that brings together the history of collections, architecture and work.
The predecessor of Szerencs Castle was built in 1557–1558 under the direction of Ferenc Némethy. Stones from the Benedictine abbey that stood there at the time were used in its construction. The Reformed Church near the castle dates back to the 13th century, stands on Romanesque foundations and features Gothic elements. Its architecture therefore reveals several different historical influences.
Visitors can learn about the history of the Reformed Church of Szerencs and its congregation on request; advance registration is requested where possible. The municipal baths in Szerencs opened in August 1910 and have been temporarily closed since 1 September 2026.

A nature trail connects the Aggtelek and Jósvafő entrances to Baradla Cave and introduces the area’s natural and cultural heritage. Near Jósvafő, you can also find the Hucul herd grazing in the Gergés-lápa pastures, around 1.5 kilometres north of the village. It can be visited year-round, although animal management regulations may change. Check the latest visiting arrangements before you go. Culture enthusiasts will find other specific points of interest in the wider destination, too. Diósgyőr Castle flourished under King Louis the Great in the 14th century and later served as a residence and a wedding gift for six queens. The National Theatre of Miskolc is a performing arts complex with five stages. For a scenic journey, the Lillafüred Forest Railway runs from Diósgyőr via Lillafüred to Garadna; as timetables can change, it is worth checking the latest schedule in advance.
