The historic Avas wine cellars form a group of around 900 cellars and wine houses in the city centre. Many are 300 to 400 years old. The Miskolc National Theatre on Széchenyi Street stands on the site where Hungary's first stone theatre once stood. Here, a present-day theatre venue meets the history of its predecessor. Diósgyőr Castle also has a clearly defined historical role: until 1526, it was the bridal gift and country residence of six queens. The permanent exhibition “On the Paths of Primeval Forests” offers a glimpse into prehistoric times. Miskolc's cultural range thus extends from urban history and religious collections to archaeology.
Caves and Nature Trails
The Anna Cave lies beside the Hanging Gardens of Lillafüred. Guided tours are offered year-round; 208 metres of the cave's total length of 570 metres are open to visitors. Check the current tour schedule before your trip. The Hanging Gardens are freely accessible, but their stone steps make them difficult to navigate with a wheelchair or pushchair. This difference may be important when planning if you are considering visiting both the cave and the gardens.
The protected Szeleta Cave takes its name from the prehistoric Szeleta culture. Near the Miskolc Zoo and Cultural Park, a nature trail leads to a nine-metre-high observation tower and over a valley on a 32-metre-long suspension bridge. Both places give Miskolc's natural side its own character: one combines a cave with a reference to prehistory, while the other pairs a nature trail with striking structures.
The Szinva Nature Trail, around four kilometres long, runs from Ottó Herman Memorial Park to Lillafüred. Another way to experience the area is the Lillafüred chairlift, which travels one kilometre to Mount Jávor. The stated distance and destination describe the route, without specifying a walking time or operating schedule.
