For cyclists and walkers, the Cinder Track offers a considerably longer excursion. It runs for 21 miles from Scarborough to Whitby, follows a disused railway line and has been converted into a bridleway and cycleway. The South Cliff Gardens also have their own distinctive character. The Italian Gardens feature formal planting, seating and a fishpond watched over by a statue of the Roman god Mercury. Along the one-mile-long Marine Drive, the Sea Wall Heritage Trail also offers insights into Scarborough’s history through 31 engraved granite viewing panels. The Cliff Lift should also be taken into account when planning: in August 2026, North Yorkshire Council decided to close it immediately after an independent technical inspection identified several problems with the ageing infrastructure. The Cliff Lift originally opened in 1875 and is considered the oldest cliff railway in Great Britain. When choosing accommodation, it is therefore worth considering the location and planned routes independently rather than taking this historic connection for granted.
