Egton – Village History, Esk Dale and Paths through the Landscape

The Forge and Market Place Cottage in Egton Village is a Grade II listed building.

The farming past can also still be read in individual buildings. A wooden threshing floor and a working horse-powered threshing machine have been preserved inside the listed range of buildings. The listed range of buildings approximately ten metres south of Red House Farm House is a late-18th-century threshing barn with a cart shed and attached livestock, cow and stable buildings. In the vicinity of Egton, Egton Bridge is also home to the country’s oldest surviving gooseberry show; it was established in 1800.

Cycling, Walking and Regional Events

The North York Moors Cycleway passes through Egton and complements the historical discoveries with a sporting perspective. For walkers, the Glaisdale and Egton Bridge Walk is of interest: the five-mile circular route runs between Glaisdale and Egton Bridge. Both villages are stops on the Esk Valley Railway, and the circular route can be walked from either station. This allows the tour to be planned around different arrival and departure points, without attributing an unsupported walking time or level of difficulty to the route.
