Holmfirth combines historic cinema culture, television history, music, wine and routes through the surrounding area. Anyone looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home can therefore plan their trip around their own interests: the focus is on culture and local history, complemented by a wine tasting or a walk. This selection also offers families with different interests plenty to talk about and various ways to spend their days.

Cinema, television and Holmfirth’s cultural heritage

One defining place is the Picturedrome. It was Holmfirth’s first purpose-built cinema and opened on 1 March 1913. Today, it is still used as a cinema, serves as a music venue and houses Holmfirth’s big screen. Live shows are also held there occasionally. The Picturedrome therefore represents both early cinema history and current cultural events.

A Heritage Trail through the history and heritage of the town runs through the centre of Holmfirth. Its preserved architectural heritage includes Georgian buildings, characteristic under-and-over dwellings and weavers’ houses with rows of tall mullioned windows. These windows are a reminder of the former woollen textile industry. Anyone interested in how a town developed and in its architecture will find a thematic way in here that differs from simply attending an event.

The British sitcom “Last of the Summer Wine” is also part of Holmfirth’s history: it was filmed in Holmfirth. Sid’s Café is a visitor stop associated with the series. When planning your trip, this focus can be combined with the Heritage Trail or a visit to the Picturedrome, without limiting your stay to just one theme.

Festival, art and a taste of Yorkshire

The Holmfirth Festival of Folk has been held in Holmfirth for more than 40 years; in 2026, it will be the 48th edition. The Art Market brings artists from across Yorkshire to Holmfirth. Both examples broaden the cultural perspective beyond buildings and film history.

The Holmfirth Vineyard offers a special addition. The visitor tour includes a guided tasting of three Yorkshire wines. The tours also include a walk through the vines and a tour of the winery, where the winemaking process is explained. This allows you to complement a stay shaped mainly by culture with a culinary experience.

Combining walking with your personal interests

For an active day out, the Wolfstones, Meltham and Upperthong Circular Walk starts at Holmfirth Library. The Holmfirth Tourist Information Centre provides local tourist information and information about walking routes. Your choice of accommodation can therefore be based on whether you mainly want to include history and events, wine and regional produce, or a route in your trip. Information about the individual experiences should always be considered separately.
