Trefonen: Walking Trails, Landscape and Mining History

Trefonen combines distinctive landscapes, walking trails and a rich local history. The Offa’s Dyke National Trail passes through Trefonen and forms part of a 177-mile, or 285-kilometre, National Trail along the border between England and Wales. This makes the village particularly well suited as a destination for travellers who want to combine activity, landscapes and regional history.

Walking trails for different days of your trip

The “Trefonen Walks” collection comprises six local walks that start at the QEII Jubilee Field. This gives you various options for planning your days: you can choose one of the local routes or combine your stay with a section of the Offa’s Dyke National Trail. The “Trefonen Walks” booklet is available free of charge from the Village Shop and can also be downloaded.

A particularly distinctive historical walk is “WW1 Centenary Walks – Walk 2 – North & East of Trefonen”. The four-mile circular route follows lanes, paths and field tracks; part of the route follows the Offa’s Dyke National Trail. In 2018, four memorial walks were established in Trefonen, Treflach and Nantmawr to mark the centenary of the First World War. They follow local footpaths and roads past the houses where the 31 people from the villages who were killed in the First World War lived.

The Trefonen Hill Walk is also part of the local walking history. It has taken place every year since it began in 1988 and offers walks of different lengths as well as changing events. If you want to accommodate different preferences within your travel group, you can choose between shorter and longer walking formats without losing sight of the village’s historical and landscape character.

Landscape and memorial sites

Trefonen Brook forms a significant valley that is important for wildlife. Bwyltai Wood, a mixed woodland of additional importance for nature and wildlife, is also located near Trefonen. The landscape immediately surrounding Trefonen, Treflach and Nantmawr has been designated as an area of special landscape character. These different landscape features give a stay several perspectives: alongside walking, you can experience the surroundings as a natural environment and connect the trails with historical sites.

The local history also includes Trefonen War Memorial, which was unveiled and dedicated on 1 January 1920, as well as two sculptures on the former spoil heap. They depict working miners. In the 18th and 19th centuries, traditional agriculture in Trefonen was supplemented by coal mining and brickmaking. Anyone interested in the development of rural communities and their working life will therefore find not only a walking landscape here, but also tangible reminders of former activities.

Public transport in the Trefonen area is limited. Buses from Oswestry occasionally travel to this area and beyond.
