In the other direction, the 15-mile or 24-km section from Llanwddyn to Meifod runs away from the reservoir and then follows parts of the River Vyrnwy before reaching Meifod. This allows you to choose between a section with views of Lake Vyrnwy and the dam and a route that continues along the River Vyrnwy when planning your activities.

Memorial Sites and Architectural History

Today’s landscape is also shaped by the history of the flooded Vyrnwy Valley. The old village of Llanwddyn and all the buildings in the valley that were to be covered by the lake’s waters were demolished. St. Wddyn's Church was built as a replacement for the Llanwddyn parish destroyed by the flooding of the Vyrnwy Valley and was completed in 1887.

Another distinctive memorial site is the Llanwddyn Obelisk. It is approximately 8 metres high and commemorates 44 workers who died during the construction of the Lake Vyrnwy dam and the associated works at the reservoir. A public footpath leads from the hotel car park to the obelisk. Bethel Methodist Chapel adds to the historic character: it was built in 1889 after its original location was flooded for the Lake Vyrnwy reservoir. Its Gothic design, with stone walls, a slate roof and an entrance following the Short-Wall plan, gives the site a specific architectural detail.
