Castles, Bridge and Town History

A prominent landmark is Chepstow Bridge, built in 1816 and also known locally as Old Wye Bridge. It is considered the longest surviving road bridge with an iron arch from the pre-Victorian era and is designated as a Grade I listed building. Chepstow is therefore home to a structure that makes the town’s engineering history and its relationship with the River Wye visible.

Chepstow Port Wall also forms part of the town’s historic character. It was built in the 13th century. This focus is complemented by Chepstow Museum, housed in an elegant 18th-century building. The building was constructed by a wealthy merchant family from Chepstow. This creates a cultural contrast with longer walks through the countryside when planning your trip. The Coral Welsh Grand National is held every year on 27 December at Chepstow Racecourse.

Walking Trails for Shorter and Longer Itineraries

Chepstow has three town walks. The full Chepstow town walk takes approximately 90 minutes, providing a compact way to include the town in a varied day of travel. If you would prefer to plan a longer route, the Wales Coast Path in Monmouthshire can be walked along the approximately 14-mile (22 km) route from Chepstow to Magor. Chepstow is also the official start or end point of the Wales Coast Path.

For longer walks, the Monmouthshire section of the Wye Valley Walk runs from the Welsh coast at Chepstow via Tintern to Monmouth. The route is around 17 miles (25–27 km) long and runs almost entirely along woodland paths. The area is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. In addition, the Offa's Dyke National Trail from Chepstow via Tintern to Monmouth offers views of the Wye Valley. Depending on your preferred pace, you can therefore focus on a short circular walk, a longer connection or a countryside-focused day of walking.
