Llanberis: Lake, Slate History and Mountain Paths
Accommodation in Llanberis
Llanberis brings together lakeside scenery, slate history and mountain paths. Dolbadarn Castle stands on a high rock overlooking Llyn Padarn and the Llanberis Pass. Around the village, options range from paths by the lake and a railway journey to a challenging route to the summit of Yr Wyddfa. When planning a trip, you can weigh up culture, scenery and different ways of getting around.
Slate History and Dolbadarn Castle
Dolbadarn Castle was probably built in the late 12th century by Llywelyn ap Iorwerth. The castle’s setting is as striking as its history: it rises from a high rock above Llyn Padarn and the Llanberis Pass. In Llanberis, the legacy of slate quarrying also leads to notable historic sites. The National Slate Museum is housed in Victorian workshops built in the shadow of Elidir Mountain. The museum is currently closed for a renewal project; check its reopening status before your trip.
The Quarry Hospital reveals another side of local history. It displays historic medical equipment and treatments once used to care for quarry workers. Dinorwic Quarry Hospital, near the National Slate Museum, was built in 1860. Together, the castle, workshops and hospital represent different chapters in Llanberis’ history—from the probably medieval castle to the living and working conditions of slate mining.
Lakeside Paths and Parc Padarn
Around Llyn Padarn, woodland, quarry and lakeside paths meet: Padarn Country Park has all three types of path along the lake’s northern shores. The Lake Walk in Parc Padarn is approximately 8 kilometres long and takes about 2.5 hours; path conditions can vary. This gives you a practical guide for planning your day, while recognising that not all paths in the park have the same destination or length.
The Vivian Trail offers another way to explore the park. It is marked with dark blue waymarkers, which may change during maintenance work. Vivian Quarry contains a 20-metre-deep pool. Alongside the woodland and lakeside paths, this creates a varied landscape where water and traces of quarrying stand side by side.
Two Railway Journeys, Different Experiences
The Llanberis Lake Railway runs along the shore of Lake Padarn to Penllyn and through Padarn Country Park. Its round trip is five miles long and takes approximately 60 minutes. All trains have spaces for wheelchair users, although these are limited in number. The railway operates seasonally; check the latest service information before your trip. This makes it easy to distinguish a lakeside train journey from the time you might set aside for a walk or hike.
The Snowdon Mountain Railway runs from Llanberis station to the summit of Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa). Unlike the journey around Lake Padarn, it climbs to the summit; its operation depends on the season and weather. Millions of travellers have made this journey since 1896. If you include both railways in your holiday plans, you will be comparing two different ways to experience the scenery—a round trip by the lake and a mountain railway journey to the summit. Check the latest service information for each in advance.
Challenging Mountain Route and Getting There
The Llanberis Path begins in the village of Llanberis. It is a ten-minute walk from Llanberis Interchange to the start. The route is 14.5 kilometres long, rated difficult and strenuous, and climbs gradually to the summit of Yr Wyddfa. Good physical fitness and navigation skills are required; assess conditions before setting out. Compared with the approximately 8-kilometre Lake Walk, this route requires different timing and tour planning. These differing demands are therefore a useful factor when choosing which experiences to include in your trip.
The Sherpa'r-Wyddfa bus routes S1, S2 or S5 connect Llanberis with Pen y Pass. As routes and route numbers may change, check the current timetable before travelling. When choosing holiday accommodation in Llanberis, it helps to first consider whether slate history, paths around Llyn Padarn, a railway journey or the challenging mountain route will shape your trip.
